GEOPOLITICS OR THE ART OF GIVING AWAY PART
- The Russian-Georgian war that ignited in South Ossetia is gradually becoming history, the military component is getting smaller in the developments, meanwhile many people still wonder what the world experienced in South Ossetia. What was that, emotionality of Sahakashvili or Putin’s revenge, or a rather subtle geopolitical plan which had a more global purpose than South Ossetia, to which thousands of people, both peaceful people and soldiers, from all the three sides fell victims? It is hard to believe that Sahakashvili was that ingenuous to wage a war alone against Russia, and the world was asleep not to prevent him. Sahakashvili who held a rally of his supporters at the center of Tbilisi after the failure of Georgia in the military action stated that he had expected the international community to stand up against the aggression of Russia but his hope did not come true. Perhaps Sahakashvili went frank, fully or partly, as soon as he saw thousands of people gathered there. The only question is the reason for that confidence in the international community. Was it the statements of the representatives of the same community not to allow Russia to interfere with the Georgian-Ossetian war or was the confidence based on the primitive perception that Georgia is a friend of the international community, whereas Russia is a rival, and they would not let the rival offend the friend. Perhaps the Armenian blood prevailed in Sahakashvili, for which some circles in Georgia think that an Armenian revolution took place in Georgia in 2004. Perhaps the Armenian blood did not let him remember that in politics the notions of friends and foes are highly conventional, and it is the interests that prevail. Therefore, to realize the situation, especially with such lack of information, perhaps it is necessary to view who benefitted from what happened. It may help to suggest after all who initiated the clash. It seems that one of those who benefitted is Russia. It was able to teach a lesson to Georgia and to display to the world that it is still able to make independent decisions and ignore the threats of the international community to isolate it from world politics. Besides, Russia actually solved the issues of Abkhazia and Ossetia in its favor, by deploying its troops there, apparently for a long time. On the other hand, however, it is apparent that Russia lost considerably both in the South Caucasus and the global political process. For instance, the question occurs for what Russia needed Ossetia and Abkhazia if they separate from Georgia and Russia cannot use them as a tool against that country anymore. Abkhazia and Ossetia may even become a load for Russia because the government of the Russian Federation provided considerable financial assistance to the regimes of those unrecognized countries and sustained them to influence Georgia through separatist moods. Meanwhile, now the question occurs why Russia will need to finance the rulers of those unrecognized countries if they have lost their main function, to play on the nerves of the government of that country. It is also a question what will happen if Russia stops financing. In that case, Ossetia and Abkhazia may become uncontrollable territories and actually potential Chechnyas for Russia. In other words, when Russia starts making senseless expenditures, it will realize that it needed Georgia rather than those countries, meanwhile it got what it did not need and lost what it needed to have prospects in the Caucasus. It seems that Abkhazia and Ossetia benefitted since they finally separated from Georgia. On the other hand, however, Abkhazia and Ossetia wishing to separate from Georgia are factors, whereas Abkhazia and Ossetia which have seceded from Georgia stop being a factor. Consequently, the impression that they benefitted is at least highly relative. Strange though it may sound, Georgia benefitted. In this case, the notion of Georgia should not be identified with Sahakashvili. Intentionally or unintentionally, Sahakashvili delivered Georgia from illusions regarding Abkhazia and Ossetia among the elite of the country, although maybe in the form of different approaches. Generally, Georgia ridded of Abkhazia and Ossetia, although at first sight it seems to be a loss, it was nevertheless ballast which if ridded of will make it easier to travel. In other words, the load of Georgia became lighter, Russia got loaded, Ossetia and Abkhazia lost their essential importance, the gates of the South Caucasus were shut before Russia. Who benefitted?
