U.S. EMBASSY FEATURES HISPANIC-AMERICAN HERITAGE AND MARIACHI IMPERIAL DE AMERICA, AUGUST 16-23

The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that it will showcase America’s cultural diversity by featuring Mariachi Imperial de America from August 16-23, 2008. Mariachi music, a lyrical art form which has its origin in 19th century Mexico, is traditionally represented by nostalgic love songs performed in a minstrel style. During the 20th century, Mariachi music grew in popularity in the United States as an increasing number of immigrants arrived from Mexico and Central America. Mariachi music has become deeply rooted in the U.S., where it has taken on unique characteristics and has become a part of Hispanic-American cultural heritage. The revival and adaptation of an American Mariachi style has given new life to the traditional art, whose appeal transcends ethnic groups and national borders. Mariachi Imperial de America has performed for more than 25 years and has been featured on popular TV shows, including Good Morning America. Under the direction of Jose Longoria (violin), the group has recorded two CDs and has received numerous awards. Group members also include Jorge Longoria (violin), Adrian Longoria (vihuela), Judy Gonzalez (violin), Jonathon Kabay (trumpet), Isidro Tristan Jr. (guitarron), and Carlos Castro (trumpet). They are managed by Gordon Bronitsky. Mariachi Imperial will perform at the Conservatory Park in Yerevan on August 17. They will also perform in the regions. Mariachi Imperial will appear in Theater Square in Gyumri on August 18, Aznavour Concert Hall Square in Vanadzor on August 19, Culture Palace Square in Ijevan on August 20, and the Freedom Square in Noyemberyan on August 21. All concerts are open to the public and free of charge.
