DASHNAKTSUTYUN’S HOPE IS ABDULLAH GUL

If there was the slightest chance that Abdullah Gul would accept Serge Sargsyan’s invitation and would come to Armenia to watch football, after the statement of Armen Rustamyan, the representative of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun Supreme Body the chance vanished. And Rustamyan stated that if Gul comes to Armenia, Dashnaktsutyun will hold actions of protest. Certainly, he underlined that the actions will be in accordance with the international, civil norms, but who knows what an international and civil norm is for the ARF Dashnaktsutyun, especially that Dashnaktsutyun has not officially rejected the wish to turn Istanbul into a sea of blood, or has not denied ever having such a wish. Hence, no matter how fond of the Armenian-Turkish relations and football Gul is, he will not love it more than his life. Therefore, we can already regret the loss of the chance of contact with our neighbor. However, the loss of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun is heavier. Although not as heavy as it would be in case of the recognition of the Genocide and fair solution of the Armenian issue. In that case, the meaning of existence of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun, as different colleagues of mine have noted at different times, would immediately disappear. Meanwhile, in this case only several days in 2008 will lose their meaning for the ARF Dashnaktsutyun which certainly could be used with great enthusiasm to plan, try and hold actions of protest against Abdullah Gul. However, although it is better to lose the meaning of existence for several days rather than forever, those few days may have dramatic consequences for the ARF. After all, the party is not so young to take it easy. 118 years is not a joke. Moreover, it is a matter of constant surveillance of doctors. In addition, in countries with a developed health care system anything aged 118 years would not be allowed to go on protest. After all, demonstrators do demonstrations, whereas the government is responsible for the consequences. What if something happens to the 118-years-old ARF Dashnaktsutyun? In that case the National Assembly would need to set up an ad hoc committee for the events of September 6. However, the Armenian government may have thought about this and it should not be ruled out that the government would not authorize rallies or marches out of worry for the security, health and life of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun as it does not authorize the opposition. However, the opposition is authorized after negotiations with the police. In this case, however, there would be no police for the ARF Dashnaktsutyun to negotiate with. The police would be deployed on the roads, at the stadiums, even in the field in the image of the referee, or the goalkeeper, or even boys running after balls. Where would the ARF Dashnaktsutyun get policemen to negotiate with and a chance to hold a rally and a march? That is why, in reality, Dashnaktsutyun will probably rid of a bugbear if Gul is scared and does not arrive. But what if he were not scared and arrived, who else would be scared of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun in that case? Nobody, and they might even seize the parliament seats and ministerial posts that they had given to the ARF Dashnaktsutyun out of the fear of provocation of instability. Therefore, if Abdullah Gul turns down Serge Sargsyan’s invitation, he will do a great favor to the continuity of the governmental career of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun. Therefore, in reality the September days are not lost for the ARF Dashnaktsutyun because instead of a demonstration of protest, in case Gul does not come, the ARF Dashnaktsutyun can mark those days with a demonstration of gratefulness that Gul did not come, and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun remained in the coalition, and generally in the history of Armenia.
