AUGUST 1 WAS DECLARED A DECIDING AND KEY HAVEN

The center of the popular movement made a statement on July 23 which was released to reporters by the representative of the Center Levon Zurabyan. The statement is on the rally on August 1. The Center notes in the statement that the government obviously neglects the PACE resolutions, as well as tries to deceive the Council of Europe with small ruses as if it meets the demands of the resolutions. Levon Zurabyan said the government continues not to authorize the rallies of the opposition, has stopped the process of releasing political prisoners since the PACE summer session, which had started after the spring session of the PACE. According to Levon Zurabyan, since the PACE summer session when a decision was made to postpone the issue of Armenia till January 2009 only 3 have been released. Besides, the representative of the Center of the Popular Movement said the TV channels have again been instructed not to allow the opposition to television and launch a total propaganda for the government which resembles Brezhnev’s propaganda. According to the Center, this situation is evidence that the government has no genuine wish to carry out a democratic reform in the country, and all people can do is to rise to protect their rights. The Center of the Popular Movement appealed to the citizens to take part in the rally of the opposition on August 1. And in the statement of the Center the rally of August 1 is described as a key and deciding haven towards the establishment of civil law, democracy in Armenia and Constitutional order.
