MARCH 1 AND SEPTEMBER 11
- Yesterday the department of public relations of the National Assembly issued an interesting release. According to that release, Steve Benex, director of political and economic programs of the U.S. embassy, handed out the methodology of the ad hoc committee inquiring into the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 to the ad hoc committee to inquire into the events of March 1. The inquiry into the terrorist attack in New York lasted rather long in the United States. Although immense work was done, the efforts of the committee for years did not satisfy the desire of the American society to learn the truth. Moreover, different layers of the society of the United States is convinced that the terrorist attack in New York had nothing to do with the activities of the Islamist fundamentalists, and the relevant agencies of the United States were at least aware of the expected attack. Most representatives of the American society, government agencies even stated that the terrorist attack had been put up by the special services of the United States. The United States is a country of freedom, and everyone is free to express their opinion and to carry out their own inquiry. Dozens, hundreds of books, films, newspaper stories appeared with different interpretations of what had happened. The American state has the strength to allow the society to express themselves freely, and believe in their righteousness. Now let us come back to our poor wretched ad hoc committee. Imagine the committee adopts the American methodology which not only supposes a consistent scrutiny but also mechanisms of public confidence. Certainly the events of March 1 cannot be compared with 9/11. In Yerevan everything is much clearer: “someone” ordered “others” to shoot at the peaceful demonstrators. Now the committee must reveal that “someone” and those “others”, the one who ordered and the ones who shot. It seems to be quite easy and no methodology seems necessary. But only at first sight. The point is that everyone has seen how the easy cases end up in Armenia.
