FOOTBALL, ABDULLAH GUL, ROBERT KOCHARYAN AND SERGE SARGSYAN
It is not right to ask the question how long it is possible to wait for the response of Abdullah Gul. Serge Sargsyan stated this in a news conference on July 21 when the reporters asked how long he can wait for Abdullah Gul’s answer to his invitation to watch football. According to Serge Sargsyan, it is possible to wait long and it is possible to wait long but what is important is the tendency of discussion of problems between the societies regarding the improvement of the relations of Armenia and Turkey. “I am sure that Abdullah Gul’s visit to Armenia can be turned into a steady movement,” Serge Sargsyan said. He also responded to the observation of the reporters that the ex-president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan stated that if he were president, no invitation would be sent to Gul. Serge Sargsyan said he thinks it is not criticism. He thinks Robert Kocharyan merely expressed his disagreement. Serge Sargsyan says earlier too Robert Kocharyan did not agree with him on all the matters but did not voice disagreement publicly. Serge Sargsyan said he respects the stance of Robert Kocharyan. Serge Sargsyan also stated that Abdullah Gul knows that in Armenia there are people who have another idea of the Armenian and Turkish relation, which is also found in the Turkish society but it cannot be a reason for doing nothing. Serge Sargsyan says he thinks the supporters of improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations are many more. As to the likelihood of Gul to accept the invitation, Serge Sargsyan said he thinks that logic should prevail. He says it is wrong to think that the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relation favors Armenia only. According to Serge Sargsyan, the improvement favors both and it is impossible to oppose to good sense all the time. Serge Sargsyan also said that his initiative for the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations did not intend to undermine the opposition. Serge Sargsyan stated that the problem of the Armenian and Turkish relation has always tormented him, and he is aware that the solution of the problem will bring about success for Armenia, and both countries will benefit from it. According to Serge Sargsyan, instead of causing problems it is necessary to solve problems between neighbors, and it concerns not only Turkey but also Azerbaijan. He also underlined the importance of the Armenian and Georgian relation and stability in Georgia because Georgia is the only country via which the main transport route of Armenia passes. In this connection Serge Sargsyan stated likely to meet with the Georgian president to talk about the new possibilities of expanding the Armenian and Georgian relation. Serge Sargsyan also underlined the importance of relations between Iran and Armenia, noting that Iran is our most important partner in various joint programs and interests, as well as the existence of a big Armenian community in that country. By the way, Serge Sargsyan stated with regard to making the invitation to Gul in Moscow that it should not be viewed in terms of making the invitation during a visit to Moscow but that the invitation was made from the biggest community of the Armenian Diaspora. According to Serge Sargsyan, in that case the difference it notable.
