“THIRD POLE”: RECURRENT POLITICAL DEVICE
The necessity of shaping a certain “third pole” is being considered more often. The press has written a lot about this issue, often ascribing that initiative to one government set or another. The political forces negotiating the setup of the “third pole” or force are minor parties which used to adhere to one alliance or another in different periods of political life and thereby remained on the arena. On the other hand, certain pro-political and analytical circles are also considering this issue as a possibility to remain in active politics, to assume a certain role. The justification of the “third pole” is very simple: the “poles” of the government and the opposition clash, destroy each other, and the stage is cleared for activity. The advocates of a “third pole” in ideological terms do not set forward a more or less grounded theory except for indefinite pronouncements of the “national” type. On the other hand, however, it is impossible to set forward one since the calculation of the “third pole” is rather groundless and unrealistic. The developments of the past two years in Armenia, mainly without the participation of the social and political circles, have led the country into a new quality. At last the real pole has formed in Armenia, the society, which ridded of different myths and “national grounds” and became aware of its main goal, its rights. In other words, in Armenia, good or bad, a regular system has emerged, including the society and political poles. One of the main mistakes of the advocates of the “third pole” is that all they can do is to be in one pole or the other. They are misled by the thought that the government and the opposition are different poles. The government and the opposition are the different wings of the same pole which, according to the classic rules, compete to win over the other pole, the society. It is another issue that the government had never set such a goal in Armenia because there seemed to be no need for that as the society did not exist as a pole. This time, however, the government has to face up to the fact because it is already impossible to shape government through the old methodology in Armenia, which we now witness. The other important thing is what language the different wings of the political system talk to the society, how adequate they are to the new reality, how they realize the public interest. In this sense, the political pole is hopelessly behind the pole of the society, the expression of which is the current crisis in Armenia. Hence, the idea of the “third pole” can be a mere device aiming to mislead the society. HAIK ARAMYAN
