DID BUSH SET A BAD MODEL TO SERGE SARGSYAN?
Serge Sargsyan’s step to invite the Turkish president Abdullah Gul to watch football in Armenia is a positive one, and in fact a situation has occurred when Armenia takes the initiative regarding the Armenian and Turkish relation rather than waits for others, said the historian Artak Shakaryan on July 16 at the Hayeli club. According to him, the idea of the joint Armenian and Turkish commission which Serge Sargsyan endorsed should not be perceived as negative. The historian says it is a diplomatic step, and noted that no such commission may be set up in the upcoming years but importantly Armenia thus took the initiative and showed to the international community that it is ready for a compromise and it can offer its own scenario. According to the historian, in diplomacy it is necessary to give in order to take. In answer to the question whether that scenario had been offered by Armenia and whether it was accidental that the invitation of Armenia to Gul was first made in Moscow rather than Yerevan the historian said it is not important who put the water on the table, it is important that the water is on the table. Shushan Khatlamajyan, political scientist, hosted at the Hayeli club for a debate with him says she thinks it is the mistake of the Armenian diplomacy that all the cards on the Armenian and Turkish relations were opened at once. According to Khatlamajyan, if they were opened in turn, they would have a greater importance. With regard to Serge Sargsyan’s statement on an Armenian and Turkish commission, the political scientist doubts that he meant a commission to inquire into historical facts. In answer to the observation of the reporters that this is exactly what Serge Sargsyan said, Shushan Khatlamajyan said it may have been a mistake, which is not a surprise because Bush, for instance, makes a lot of mistakes in speech. Generally, the political scientist thinks that the Armenian side does not have its own scenario regarding the Armenian and Turkish relation, meanwhile Turkey is a grand master of diplomacy which calculates several steps ahead, and would perhaps do the same regarding response to the Armenian initiative. Generally, Shushan Khatlamajyan thinks that in drafting its foreign policy official Yerevan seldom relies on analysts and experts.
