STEPAN DEMIRCHYAN THINKS THERE WILL BE STABILITY ONLY IN ONE CASE

I hope that the CoE human rights commissioner Thomas Hammarberg will prepare an objective report on Armenia and will be helpful to the solution of this situation, stated the leader of the People’s Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchyan on July 15 at the Hayatsk club. With regard to the recurrent appeal of the government for a dialogue, which was made by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan in addressing the conference of the Heritage Party, Stepan Demirchyan said the opposition is ready for a dialogue but in case the political prisoners are set free. And the government has made no steps in that direction, Stepan Demirchyan says. He also touched upon the hundred days of tenure of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan. The leader of the People’s Party of Armenia said the country is in a difficult economic situation, exports drop, imports grow, production rates decline. At the same time, Stepan Demirchyan said one hundred days is too little to solve the problems but no positive tendencies have emerged yet, says the leader of the People’s Party of Armenia. As to the HR policy of Tigran Sargsyan, Stepan Demirchyan said he has no real levers regarding those issues. The leader of the People’s Party also answered the question how the opposition is going to demand the resignation of the president after August 1 if Serge Sargsyan does not meet the demands of the opposition. Stepan Demirchyan said there are different ways of demanding resignation but the important thing is that the opposition will always act in accordance with the law. Stepan Demirchyan said that Armenia certainly needs stability to face to external challenges but stability is possible only in case of extraordinary elections. In answer to the question about his possible nomination if Levon Ter-Petrosyan does not run in case a new presidential election is held, Stepan Demirchyan said he will speak about it when such a situation occurs.
