SALVATION BROUGHT BY AN AD HOC COMMITTEE CANNOT BE STANDING
- The ad hoc parliamentary committee to inquire into the events of March 1 decided last week to divide the inquiry into two parts and inquire into each part separately. The committee will study what happened at the Square of Freedom in the morning of March 1 and at the square near the City Hall separately. Certainly the committee members deserve gratitude for that important decision which as it became known is passed on a consensus. However, considering the wisdom and insight of the committee, and especially its staff, it is evident that a wiser decision could have been made. In particular, the inquiry into the events of March 1 could have been divided at least into six parts: before breakfast, after breakfast, before lunch, after lunch, before dinner, after dinner. For more productivity, the events of March 1 could have been divided into as many parts as the members of the committee. Thus, every member would study thoroughly an episode that occurred on March 1 and draw a conclusion. Afterwards the committee would join together all the small conclusions and get a big conclusion. This big conclusion would be presented to the society and the society would see that in reality there was no peaceful rally on March 1, there was no army and police, there were no masked killers but there were separate citizens who quarreled with separate policemen and there were separate fatal cases, like in the case of car accidents and other accidents. The ad hoc committee of the parliament will thereby consider its mission fulfilled gloriously, and the government will state that March 1 was studied thoroughly, and all the questions were answered, and since there were clashes between separate citizens and separate law enforcers, there can be no consideration of an order to fire, the person who ordered to fire, the head of the operation, the organizers, and other battlefield realities. Besides, the conclusion of the parliament committee drafted by its glorious Republican, Orinats Yerkir, Dashnaktsutyun, Bargavach Hayastan couples and, pardon me, the representatives of the extra-parliamentary forces will state that claims to bring Robert Kocharyan before the court of the Hague are groundless, and aim to denigrate the institution of the president. The committee will also come up with a legislative initiative which will define any mentioning of bringing Robert Kocharyan before the Hague as an encroachment on the Armenian identity and a crime. For the application of such an innovative methodology to the inquiry the members of the committee to inquire into the events of March 1 would get more opportunities for new inquiries. The first could be the inquiry into historical facts in the framework of Armenian and Turkish relations. One should not rely on historians. They may be patriotic but are devoid of political and diplomatic sensitivity. If the politically raw historians make up the Armenian party of the Armenian and Turkish committee, they may thwart the policy of reconciliation of the new government of Armenia, proving to the Turks and the world in five minutes that there was the Genocide. Meanwhile, if the members of the committee to inquire into the events of March 1 are awarded diplomas in history, and they represent Armenia to the commission, no doubt they will first divide the events of April 24, 1915 into several parts. In the end, it will turn out that there was no Genocide, separate citizens of the Ottoman Empire had disputes with separate Ottoman soldiers, and the disputes often escalated into cases of fatality, fewer among soldiers, more among the Armenian citizens. Hence, the Armenian and Turkish relations will be saved. And in vain did Robert Kocharyan complain of Serge Sargsyan who initiated the unprecedented process of Armenian and Turkish reconciliation, the salvation of the Armenian and Turkish relations. And now the committee to inquire into the events of March 1 is busy warming up, which will save Robert Kocharyan. Although, on the other hand, salvation brought by an ad hoc committee cannot be standing. HAKOB BADALYAN
