EXCHANGE RATE AWAY FROM THE EYE
The decision to remove the signs with information about the exchange rate of foreign currencies from the streets is no doubt the know-how of the new government of Armenia. The government explains this decision by concern about the architecture of the city. In other words, the signs which are hung on currency exchange spots and inform the citizens about the exchange rates of the day, in the logic of the government, spoil the appearance of the city. Therefore they made a decision and the currency exchange offices were instructed to remove the signs from the streets. Since then the citizens can learn about the rate of exchange only after entering the office. No doubt, one cannot fail to notice that for several weeks now Yerevan has become extremely harmonious and magnificent thanks to the signs which have been removed from the streets. It is a great pleasure to walk along the streets of the city. Before that people walked, and the signs with exchange rates suddenly got into their sight, and they unintentionally watched the signs and paid no attention to the city. In other words, the problem is not merely the appearance of the city but the development of tourism which our government considers as a priority. For instance, a traveler arrives in Yerevan, walks along the streets of the capital of Armenia, and all they see are signs with exchange rates. When they go home, and are asked to tell about their impressions from Yerevan, they have nothing to tell because all through their stay in Yerevan they only read the exchange rates on the signs. Hence, they cannot advertise our city adequately, and the impression abroad is that the capital of Armenia is all in currency exchange spots, and there are no restaurants, cafes or shops. Who would visit a country where there are only signs with exchange rates? As you see, it is even a matter of national security because it concerns the international reputation of our country. That is why the government should make changes to the legislation as well, and make the currency exchange spots operate with their doors closed, to rule out any possibility of looking in and learning about the exchange rate. Besides, it is necessary to set patrols in front of the exchange spots, for safety, in case someone dares to learn about the currency exchange rate. Afterwards, it is necessary to gradually declare it illegal to exchange information about exchange rates among the citizens. For instance, only relatives could be allowed to exchange this information. For instance, a man could inform only his parents, children, wife, brothers and sisters what exchange rate he saw at the exchange spots. Certainly it would take great effort to control this but the government can solve this problem by playing with the materialistic feelings of people. For instance, it may announce that the persons who will inform valuable information about breaches of the order of transfer of information about the exchange rate can exchange their foreign currency at a higher rate than the market offers. Thereby it is possible to achieve a situation when the notion of exchange rate will be deemed of as inappropriate for the Armenian identity, and the guests who will use that notion will be accused of insulting the Armenian identity. JAMES HAKOBYAN P.S. It is possible that the decision banning signs with exchange rates from the streets is determined by a much more simple problem. The point is that for relieving the imminent wave of inflation the government will again have to revaluate the Armenian dram, which already seems to be happening. And in order for the revaluation of the dram and the subsequent decline of the exchange rate of the dollar, which is the main form of income of the most part of the population, to be unnoticed for the population and not to aggravate dissatisfaction with the government, the government decided to remove the exchange rate from the streets and keep the exchange rate away from the eye. It is one thing when people in the streets can see all the time how the dollar drops and it is another thing when they face the fact at the exchange office. In other words, the government again makes people face the fact.
