THE STAR TIME OF ARMENIAN AND TURKISH HISTORIANS
During his visit to Moscow Serge Sargsyan endorsed the idea of setting up an inquiry commission of historians to study the issue of the Armenian and Turkish relations, as well as the issue of the Genocide. Serge Sargsyan’s proposal got various interpretations in Armenia, there were various responses. However, the issue should be viewed in another aspect as well, which seems to have been ignored for the time being. The point is that Article 301 of the Criminal Code of Turkey prosecutes for insulting Turkishness. Although Europe stipulates repealing of that article for accession to the EU, the Turkish government objects. Charges have been brought against Hrant Dink, Turkish intelligentsia who spoke about the Genocide under this article. Now imagine a commission of Armenian and Turkish historians is set up. What is it going to study? Certainly, the events following and preceding 1915. Thereby the commission will violate Article 301 of the Turkish Criminal Code. For his part, what should the commission do? Either it should affirm there was Genocide, and in that case the Turkish government will prosecute the commission and punish for insulting Turkishness, or the commission will conclude that no Genocide took place. In fact, there can be no third option, except that the Turkish part of the commission will deny the Genocide and the Armenian part vice versa.
