NOW THEY ONLY ORDER THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, AND THAT’S IT
- The representatives of the Republican Party regularly deny that the party has discussed the issue of replacing Speaker Tigran Torosyan by Hovik Abrahamyan. The society is skeptical about these refutations. People find it difficult to imagine that Hovik Abrahamyan becomes a member of parliament just to be a “rank-and-file” member of parliament. Even the posts of chair of parliament committees is “rank-and-file” for Hovik Abrahamyan, even the post of the speaker is such because he is the ex-deputy prime minister and the present head of the staff of the president of the country. If we lived in a country with a well-established political system and traditions, there might have been no problems at all, even if the prime minister became an ordinary member of parliament one day. However, we live in Armenia, therefore here it might be considered as a decline for the representatives of the ruling elite, both moral and physical, because Hovik Abrahamyan himself is convinced that if he becomes an ordinary member of parliament, everyone in the government will ignore him. However, there is no need to doubt the Republicans when they deny having discussed the issue of replacing Tigran Torosyan by Hovik Abrahamyan. Most probably, it is true because this issue needs no discussion. Where the decision to replace Torosyan was made they do not care for the opinion of the Republican Party. And the Republican Party cannot influence that decision because it knows where that decision has been made. Nobody asks for the opinion of the Republicans for them to discuss anything. Interestingly, however, the Republican Party was taken into consideration when non-partisan Robert Kocharyan was president rather than during the tenure of Serge Sargsyan who became the leader of the Republican Party. Certainly, this period is only three months but it is evident that over those three months the Republican influence has tended to disappear rather than to intensify. The Republican Party lost the post of president, and soon it will also lose the post of speaker. Hovik Abrahamyan certainly is a Republican but he is a later Republican than Tigran Torosyan. Therefore, if they place him instead of Torosyan without asking for the opinion of the party, and evidence to this is the absence of debate, it means this post is not appointed by the Republican Party any more. In the end, the Republicans will certainly vote in parliament for Hovik Abrahamyan to become speaker of parliament. Even Tigran Torosyan may ask them to vote. However, it will only prove that nobody asks anything from the Republican Party, they order and that’s it. However, the Republicans, especially the old Republicans, have the last chance to get out of this situation. Now it may seem rather unrealistic to them, improbable. However, at least they should try because unlike the previous years when the top of the government pyramid bought or bartered the possibility of influencing decisions from the Republican Party, now it only takes it. In other words, they used to give something to the Republican Party in return for anything they took, now they take whatever they want and give nothing in return for that, and afterwards they will take what they had given before. Therefore, the problem for the Republican Party is that of to be or not to be rather than to accept or not, as usual. In this sense, Robert Kocharyan is the way out for the natives of the Party. Perhaps they should write a collective letter to Robert Kocharyan, asking him to become a member of the Republican Party, in other words, to take care of them. Only this way can the Republicans save from drowning. But they should do it as soon as possible. And not because they may be late and they may get drowned. Simply Robert Kocharyan may get drowned earlier. Hence, Kocharyan also needs the Republican Party, and it increases the probability of a positive reply to the letter to be addressed to him. On the other hand, however, Robert Kocharyan need not wait until the Republicans call on him. He may submit an application for membership the first, after all his process of drowning seems to be faster. After all, even if the Republicans and Kocharyan fail to help each other, they will at least relieve their destiny, in the sense that they have worked together and at least they will get drowned together.
