RALLY TOOK PLACE, SCORE IS 45:1
- The rally of the Popular Movement of June 28 in Gyumri was to start at 5 pm but Suren Surenyants who conducted the rally said that the government declared Saturday a working day, which creates certain obstacles for the participants of the rally, and Levon Ter-Petrosyan is a little late because on the way people stopped his car to greet the first president. “We have not come to inspire you, to call for resolve, we have not come to encourage you because you do not need that. On the contrary, we have come to get inspired, to get encouraged by you because after the election you proved that Gyumri is politically the most active city of Armenia,” said the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan during the rally in Gyumri. Despite the heavy shower, thousands of citizens of Gyumri rallied on the Square of Freedom of the city and stayed till the end. The leader of the Popular Movement Levon Ter-Petrosyan said with regard to the events of March 1: “They added to the election fraud the crime of March 1 against their own people. The wrongdoers are known but the police and the army did not shoot at people. Robert Kocharyan is dreaming to blame his crime of them.” The leader of the Republic Party Aram Sargsyan said in his speech: “We are honest, our demands are fair. We wanted fair elections, we said buy cars, buy houses, buy the venal intelligentsia and performers but do not buy the votes of people.” The chair of the Asparez club of journalists of Gyumri Levon Barseghyan, the leader of the Democratic Party Stepan Demirchyan addressed the rally, the message of the political prisoners Ashot Zakaryan, Gagik Jhangiryan, Hakob Halobyan, Sasun Mikayelyan, Miasnik Malkhasyan, Smbat Aivazyan, Mushegh Saghatelyan, Petros Makeyan, Davit Matevosyan, gevorg Ghazaryan, Suren Sirunyan, Husik Baghdasaryan, Hovanes Harutiunyan was read. “People proved that they are an important factor in the country, and is the lord of the government by the Constitution, and will not cede it to others. We the political prisoners welcome all the participants of the rally, reassert our resolve and assure that the Popular Movement led by President Levon Ter-Petrosyan will reach its goal.” With regard to the goals Levon Ter-Petrosyan said: “After 10 years of silence, study of science, I returned only to stop this bandit state, this is a national disaster. I repeat that I am a means, I am a tool to rid of this government.” He said it is time to establish legality and to protect people. “I believe that there are people who are new in this government and may have honest aims, Tigran Sargsyan, Edward Nalbandyan, two other ministers but I do not believe that these people will be able to take any practical steps because this system will suffocate them.” Levon Ter-Petrosyan said either they will become members of the gang or they will be ousted from that system. “I am not aspiring to government. I had decided before the election to remain president for 2 or 3 years, clean the system and transfer power to younger and more vigorous figures, Stepan Demirchyan, Aram Sargsyan, Raffi Hovannisian, Alexander Arzumanyan, Davit Shahnazaryan.” Levon Ter-Petrosyan called upon the citizens participating in the rally and informed that soon similar rallies will be held in some other “heated” cities, Talin, Hrazdan, as well as some villages. In concluding the rally Suren Surenyants said the next rally will take place on July 4 near Matenadaran. During the rally of the opposition in Gyumri (as in the previous rallies) the governmental and pro-governmental representatives were seated on the terrace of the café on the square near the Home of Chess, and when there were no more vacant seats on the terrace, they occupied the café too. They were also interested. Not only the cars of the guests from Yerevan but also about 300 cars of Gyumri people fond of darkened windows, special services, the police and other systems were parked in all the streets adjacent to the square of Gyumri. The road police were very active. The criminal investigation service was there, wearing civilian clothes and driving their own cars, in case Ben Laden showed up. But he did not show up. Although heavy shower poured from the middle of the rally, the rally remained in the focus of attention of people, and no incidents were reported. It was the first case after the events of March 1when the local authorities authorized the rally of the opposition.
