POLICEMEN PULLED DOWN THE TENT, THIS TIME IN FRONT OF OFFICE OF PROSECUTOR GENERAL
On May 16 there was a rather heated situation in front of the Office of Prosecutor General. On the eve Hrachia Sargsyan, member of the board of the Nor Jamanakner Party, went on hunger protest there. He had two demands, to provide medical aid to the leader of the Nor Jamanakner Party Aram Karapetyan who is having heart problems, and to release him from the penitentiary. Hrachia Sargsyan who went on hunger strike from the evening of May 15 spent all night and morning of May 16 on the bench in front of the Office of Prosecutor General. At midday the law enforcers “visited” him, led by the deputy chief of the Police of the Center Colonel Taron Baghdasaryan. “We were tired, we had spent all night sitting there on the condition that today at 12 o’clock it would become clear how our demands would be met. One of the demands, if you remember, was to take Aram Karapetyan to hospital, which they did at night, and the second was to release him on bail. We were anxious because the investigator had petitioned for prolonging his custody,” Hrachia Sargsyan says. Tired after a sleepless night, the protestor and his friends put up a tent on the lawn in front of the Office of Prosecutor General to have a rest. They had hardly passed a pillow to Hrachia Sargsyan to lie down a little in the tent when some policemen and special operation troops went up to the tent and demanded that Hrachia Sargsyan get out of the tent and take it away. Hrachia Sargsyan says he did not obey them because the policemen could not explain why he should do so. Afterwards, some policemen and special operation troops pulled down the tent on the instruction of Taron Baghdasaryan. They used violence against Hrachia Sargsyan and the people who supported him, including women. “They dragged me out of the tent violently. They tore the tent when I was inside it. They hit me on my legs and hands. They took away the tent. In the beginning they told me to get out of it, I suggested that the colonel provide conditions for me because I had spent 24 hours on the bench, I went on a hunger protest which is my right, I did it voluntarily but it is also my right to have a rest, can you provide conditions for my rest. He said have a rest as you want, the colonel said. I told him I wanted to have a rest in the tent, which is an accepted way in all the international laws. He said there must be no tent, I said there must be a tent and I got into the tent,” Hrachia Sargsyan says. The women who were dragged about by the policemen and special operation troops announced to go on hunger protest together with Hrachia Sargsyan. Although there was no tent, they sat down on blankets spread on the lawn, held up photos of Aram Karapetyan and chanted “Aram”, “freedom”, “Armenia is not a country of policemen”. A few minutes after the incident Manushak Petrosyan and Levon Zurabyan, the representatives of the popular movement led by Levon Ter-Petrosyan, joined the citizens. Some time later the wives of political prisoners joined, and stood in front of the Office of Prosecutor General led by Melissa Brown, the wife of the ex-foreign minister Alexander Arzumanyan, holding up photos of political prisoners and a poster “Freedom to Political Prisoners”.
