13 AZATAMARTIKS GO ON HUNGER PROTEST IN GYUMRI
On May 12, after the judge of the District Court of Gyumri Vahe Khalatyan demanded that the cameras of the Gala TV, Tsaig TV and Shant TV of Gyumri be taken out of the courtroom, Ashot Zakaryan, Petros Makeyan and Shota Saghatelyan refused to participate in the hearing of their case. Petros Makeyan stood up and said: “You might as well hold the trial in prison if you do not let people and media be present.” When the justice left the courtroom without uttering a word, and the hearing failed, 12 azatamartiks of the region of Gyumri left the courtroom with their friend-in-arms from the region of Kotayk and started hunger protest at the Gyumri office of the Union of Yerkrapah Volunteers. They demand release of Ashot Zakaryan and the other political prisoners. 22 azatamartiks of Gyumri held a 24-hour warning hunger protest on May 7 demanding to release Ashot Zakaryan on bail. Neither the court, nor the local authorities responded. Of the central government only Member of Parliament Vardan Khachatryan, Heritage Party, visited the azatamartiks. In the evening of May 12 members of parliament Vardan Khachatryan and Zaruhi Postanjyan from the Heritage Party, the primate of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church Archbishop Michael Ajapahyan and others visited them. All through the night about 120 people visited the azatamartiks at the Gyumri office of the Union of Yerkrapah Volunteers, their children, grandchildren, friends-in-arms, reporters and others were there. In the evening news on May 12 Gala TV showed the footage of the hearing of the court when the court officials searched the azatamartiks with a metal detector, who had passed through five rows of policemen at the entry of the court and asked to show IDs. Ashik Martirosyan, a 60-year-old azatamartik, hit his prosthetic leg with his cane and said his leg is his ID. The officer had just let him pass when the other officer’s metal detector gave out a sound on the body of Ashik Martirosyan. The young officer asked what it was and Ashik Martirosyan shouted that it was the debris in his body. His friends could hardly take him into the courtroom. The officer muttered that he did not mean… It was not clear what he did not mean to do. On May 13 as of 10 o’clock, 17 people are on hunger protest in the region of Shirak, 13 in Gyumri, 2 in the village of Dzorakap, in a tent at the chapel, two in Maralik at the dentist’s owned by Babken Urutyan, one of those on protest, where the two on hunger protest moved from the tent on the square not because they were forced by the police demands and intimidation but because it was very rainy in Maralik on Sunday, and the tent was not convenient for hunger protest. Members of parliament Zaruhi Postanjyan and Vardan Khachatryan from the Heritage Party visited Maralik and Dzorakap on May 12 and talked to the four men on hunger protest. All the 17 people in Shirak who have gone on hunger protest will continue protest until the government meets their demand and releases the political prisoners. They all said in private talks that it is the extreme form of protest which the authoritarian regime in Armenia has forced them to choose. If it is useless, we will use harder means, let them have no doubt, said the oldest and the youngest of the protestors. Azparez
