AZATAMARTIKS OF SHIRAK REGION GO ON HUNGER STRIKE
On May 7, the eve of the day of liberation of Shushi, 21 azatamartiks from the region of Shirak went on hunger protest after the judge of the Northern Circuit Court refused to release Ashot Zakaryan on bail. The court has already held several hearings of the case of Ashot Zakaryan, Petros Makeyan and Shota Saghatelyan, in which 500-1000 people are present every time. On May 7 the hearing was held at the small courtroom of the Palace of Justice in Gyumri, and the justice explained that he could not hear well in the big courtroom. One of the officials said the big courtroom was busy, but some time later the photographer Gagik Shamshyan took pictures of four policemen playing cards there. On May 7 the police deployed unprecedented number of force at the court of law, from 11 am 70 policemen surrounded the entry of the court and did not allow people in. Finally they let 100 people in because there are as many seats at the courtroom. Outside the disappointment of the protestors grew and someone pushed the door and broke the glass, a policeman inside took pictures of those 300 people who surrounded the courtroom, one of the demonstrators wore handcuffs and stuck his hands in the air demonstrating them to the people walking past the Square of Freedom of Gyumri. An old woman at the court room also wore handcuffs and demonstrated them to the justice. During the hearing which was delayed for two hours the chair of the election commission at poling station 34/06 was cross examined. The lady said the election was not obstructed by the accused, there was no hooliganism, and asked the court to accept her testimony rather than evidence she gave during the interrogation. The second witness said she only heard the short talk between Ashot Zakaryan and the member of the commission who put a stamp in the passport. She said she did not see them because she was registering voters but she heard Ashot Zakaryan observe that the stamp should be put on page 32. The three councils for prosecution could not get anything else from the woman. She explained the difference between her evidence and testimony that the investigator had dictated her what to write. The court burst with applause. The third witness was the secretary of the same commission, a 32-year-old woman who did not know that a presidential candidate cannot have more than 1 proxy at a polling station. Petros Makeyan read a passage from the book she had filled in according to which two proxies of Serge Sargsyan were simultaneously at the polling station all through the voting and count of votes at the polling station 34/06. The witness said nobody disturbed them, and did not recognize any of the accused and said she had not seen them at the polling station. The hearing ended 5.50 pm. During the next hearing the same witness will be cross-examined, and the evidence will be read. By the end of the hearing about 200 policemen had gathered around the court, almost everyone wearing uniforms. One of them suddenly fainted, and the ambulance took him to hospital at 6.20 pm. 10 minutes after the court hearing 21 azatamartiks went to the office of Yerkrapah and started a hunger strike which will last for 24 hours.
