WITNESS SAYS THERE WERE MERCENARIES
“We stood up to protect people. We stood along the front line but when we saw whom they had deployed. I do not mean the special force of Karabakh. I saw Russians, I saw Akhalkalakis, Leninakanis. Those who beat me and broke my limbs were from Leninakan. Those, perhaps ten of them, pulled me on the ground and beat and swore,” says Michael Apresyan, a veteran of war in Karabakh, who told about what he witnessed and underwent at the Square of Freedom in the morning of March 1 at the Hayeli club on May 6. Michael Apresyan says several rows of police force came, put down the shields and stood there. At that time, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, according to Michael Apresyan, went to the speakerphone and urged people to remain calm until they find out what the police needed. “They attacked in ten seconds. They beat severely. Women, children, old or young, it did not matter for them,” Michael Apresyan says. He says he even noticed foreign mercenaries, Chechens, whom he described as bandits, drug addicts, not troops. His impression is that an Armenian would not treat another Armenian that way. Michael Apresyan said he was saved by two ordinary policemen who took him away and told him to run away otherwise they would kill him. The reporters asked whether they had no weapon to protect themselves, especially that the government propaganda claimed that the demonstrators were armed, and there was weapon at the Square of Freedom. Michael Apresyan says there was no weapon at the Square of Freedom. In answer to the question if they would use if there were weapon, Michael Apresyan said in that situation when they were simply killing them with truncheons, if there were weapon, they would use to protect themselves. The azatamartik says he does not know if anyone was killed at the Square of Freedom. He did not see because many were lying motionless, and it is difficult to tell if they were dead or alive. Michael Apresyan says if someone lying on the ground tried to move, the police troops who stood nearby as if felt obliged to hit that person. And the truncheons, according to Michael Harutiunyan, were not ordinary truncheons but were heavy ones, filled with metal.
