AZATAMARTIKS ADMIT THEY ARE GUILTY BUT PARTLY
On May 6 Arkady Karapetyan, Vladimir Karapetyan and Michael Apresyan, field commanders of the war in Karabakh, were hosted at the Hayeli Press Club who demanded release of arrested azatamartiks and political prisoners. “It is insulting, of course, insulting and it is destruction for our people, our nation, because the young people who should be encouraged by us to defend the homeland, what will they think now? They will think that we are useless people,” Arkady Karapetyan says. Vladimir Karapetyan who used to be the commander of Tigran Mets squad, and is a member of Yerkrapah, was charged for the events of March 1. He was detained for 46 days, then released before trial. Vladimir Karapetyan says he does not understand why he and most of his friends were arrested. “Is it the gratitude that they sacrificed their lives to defend the homeland?” says the freedom fighter. The reporters asked whether they agree that the veterans of war in Karabakh are also to blame that now the veterans of war are arrested for opposing to government because at one time they allowed the criminal to take power in Armenia gradually, and criminal and political authorities to solve problems. “We are to blame. I will not open the brackets but we are to blame,” Vladimir Karapetyan says. Arkady Karapetyan, and the commander of Artsakh squad Michael Apresyan who was severely beaten in the morning of March 1 at the Square of Freedom agree with him. The reporters noted that the people who gathered at the Square of Freedom expected the veterans of war to defend them and not to allow the government to shoot at people. What happened and what hindered the veterans to prevent shooting at people, the reporters asked. Vladimir Karapetyan who was charged for an attempt of a state coup, resistance to police, says the veterans did not expect that the government which is always citing the ideas of Garegin Nezhdeh would shoot at people. According to the freedom fighter, this government believes in Taleat rather than Nezhdeh. Michael Apresyan says the government had prepared in an unprecedented way for the clampdown, every detail of the actions and provocations was worked out, and if they set tanks against their tanks, Robert Kocharyan would fly planes and helicopters to shoot at people. “The participation of Yerkrapah in the events was unpredictable because you know besides Yerkrapah there were azatamartiks from the Armenian National Army, the army of independence, Mush. There were thousands of squads. If it were solid, it would be unpredictable. Second, it should be taken into account that the government had prepared in another way. Even if Manvel Grigoryan announced, acted, the events showed that the government worked out an operation skillfully, with immense costs, an intrigue, which led to this ending. Therefore, when they say that if Yerkrapah had stood up, how should it stand up, what could it do with a machine gun against tanks, planes? Arkady Karapetyan said he would like to add that it is not the duty of Yerkrapah to beat or punish someone if something happens. “It is not our duty. I mean the guys who fought in the war. Our society has a wrong perception that if something happens those guys should take up something, beat someone,” Arkady Karapetyan says.
