DIALOGUE: TWO-SIDED MOCKERY AT AUDIENCE

At different times different words were dominant in the political sphere of Armenia, which appeared on the lips of big and small political figures, and as Steiner would put it, it seems to the figures who utter those words that an idea appeared in their mind in the form of words. In reality, in all those times when a word started to be used often in the political sphere, it immediately wore out, lost the meaning and content. For instance, the nice word “stability” ended up similarly as soon as the government tried to turn it into an idea fix for the society to defend its domain. In Armenia now the word dialogue is in fashion. Perhaps because stability has lost its magic effect. Now it is on everyone’s lips. In addition, not only in the political sphere. For instance, the issue of production of the mines of Teghut was discussed on TV. The environmentalists and the representatives of the company which is going to produce the mines of Teghut forest discussed. Environmentalists say extraction of ore will turn up a disaster for the forest of Teghut. The company naturally disagreed, and one of its representatives stated that they are no less worried about the logging of trees and call the environmentalists for a dialogue. The political processes of Armenia are actually projected on all the other spheres of life. The opposition complains of constraints on rights and freedoms, violence of the government, illegitimate, rigged elections, the illegal actions of the police, corruption, and generally the quality of public administration, and the government claims that it is no loss worried about all this and calls for a dialogue. It may remind of a situation in a football game when the referee punishes one of the teams and appoints a penalty kick, and the coach and players of the punished team admit that the actions of the other team cause concern and ask the other team to settle the problem through a dialogue rather than a penalty kick, expecting a penalty kick from 15 m rather than 11 m. Agree that the fans would not only whistle to the punished team and the referee but also to the other team which in front of tens of thousands of fans and millions of TV viewers would not take the penalty kick from 11 m but would agree to a dialogue and some 15 or 16 m. In the political sphere, as well as many other spheres of life, for whatever, reason, there are groups of people who think that the evident violation of rules could become a subject of a dialogue. Meanwhile, it violates another rule, maybe even the most important rule: every person should be responsible for violating the law. The dialogue is the best way of avoiding responsibility. The best way of getting a penalty kick from 15 m rather than 11 m and removing the ball from one’s goal. The dialogue is possible only after the penalty kick is taken from 11 m, and the teams agree not to break the rules any more. Otherwise, it would be a clear mockery at the audience, on behalf of both, which would be far more inappropriate for the punished team. HAKOB BADALYAN
