VAZGEN MANUKYAN: THE GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE
On April 17 the leader of the National Democratic Union, the ex-presidential candidate Vazgen Manukyan broke his silence since the presidential election and evaluated the events of March 1. According to him, if demonstrations take place and people get killed, the government is responsible. As to who is to blame, Vazgen Manukyan thinks the court must decide. “Who shoot at whom, who misused their powers, how the demonstrators got grenades. This is to be found out through a judicial process. The government is always responsible, and the court should decide the issue of the wrongdoers,” Vazgen Manukyan says. According to him, many speak about the victims, but most of them manipulate this issue. With regard to those arrested, Vazgen Manukyan says they should not be viewed together because there are political activists, misled people and criminals among them. The leader of the NDU says he cannot make a list of people to be released and a list of people not to be released. According to him, it is the function of the judiciary. However, Vazgen Manukyan thinks that those arrested for political reasons should be released. He says for him it is very difficult because among the arrested people there are people who accompanied him through his political career, and there are friends of childhood. As to the amendments to the law on assemblies, demonstrations and marches, which actually prohibit rallies and marches, Vazgen Manukyan says he is against them. He notes, however, that he agrees that rallies were not desirable in the upcoming two or three years because they may have taken more victims. However, Vazgen Manukyan says rallies could be prohibited temporarily rather than through a basic amendment to the law.
