PREFERABLE COUNTRIES FOR ARMENIAN REFUGEES
The head of the department for refugees and migration Gagik Yeganyan said April 15 that with the assistance of the Danish Council the Armenian government has worked out a new bill on refugees because there are a lot of uncertainties about the old procedure of granting asylum in Armenia. The new law will define the status of a refugee, the rights and duties guaranteed by people who have received asylum in Armenia. Gagik Yeganyan says more people tend to request asylum in Armenia, mainly from Iraq and Lebanon, however, there are also applications from Cuba, Somali, Turkey, Iran. Since 1999 about 1000 people have applied for asylum, of which 800 were granted the right to live but the applications for asylum were mostly turned down because the request was not sufficiently grounded. Gagik Yeganyan says the refugees to arrive in Armenia are under the aegis of the government for three months, they are provided with temporary lodging, necessary things, then the government and NGOs help them with employment and housing. The head of the department of refugees and migration thinks the inflow of refugees to Armenia has increased because it is easier to get asylum in Armenia. Gagik Yeganyan says at the same time the outflow of refugees from Armenia to other countries has decreased. In 2007 there were 3925 applications for asylum in Europe and the U.S. Most applications are to the government of France. The countries preferred by refugees from Armenia are Austria, Belgium, Czech.
