PEOPLE’S PARTY OF ARMENIA AND NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY REJECT ALL-ARMENIAN MOVEMENT’S PROPOSAL
On April 30 the All-Armenian Movement Party stated: “Considering the political situation in Armenia and the efforts of the government for reproduction, which may produce unpredictable consequences for the country, the All-Armenian Movement withdraws from the race to foster the unification of the opposition electorate.” The AAM described it as self-sacrifice, and the other forces should follow it, the AAM stated. On May 1 we asked the representatives of the People’s Party of Armenia and the National Democratic Party hosted at the Hayeli club for a debate to comment on the statement of the AAM.
The representative of the National Democratic Party Hranush Kharatyan agrees that the separate participation of 20-22 opposition forces in the election dissipates the votes of the supporters of the opposition. She says the problem is not the government-opposition division. “Unfortunately, if a person is neither government, nor opposition in Armenia, we cannot place them elsewhere.” Hranush Kharatyan thinks political debates do not include the problem why the government should be changed, by what program. “The problem is to have a program for the country. People must vote to this program. Even the candidates running on party tickets, after reciting a speech about the program which is written on paper they stop because they do not know how the program will solve the problem.” Hranush Kharatyan says the proposal of the AAM is addressed to the forces which pursue a change of the government, whereas the program of the National Democratic Party “pursues progress in the country and changes.”
The representative of the People’s Party of Armenia Rosanna Khachatryan stated that without a change of the government other changes are impossible. Rosanna Khachatryan thinks it is possible to cooperate without alliances to hold legitimate elections. The representative of the People’s Party of Armenia remembers the past events and states that the People’s Party of Armenia has always made self-sacrifice for the sake of ideas and no member of the People’s Party has reneged on their principles. As to the proposal made with only10 days to go before the voting, “first, I do not accept the tone, the style of these proposals. They include notes of coercion: if you reject, we will speak against you. The proposals which are made at the last moment, with only 10 days to go before the voting mean that certain political forces have made a move without thinking twice or they have certain intentions. Such a proposal cannot be accepted.”
