REPUBLICAN PARTY APPEARS ON TV MORE FREQUENTLY THAN OTHER PARTIES
On April 27 Yerevan Press Club released the results of the monitoring of media coverage of the election campaign on April 16-23. 13 TV channels, one radio channel and four newspapers were monitored.
The conclusion is that coverage in broadcast media is balanced and neutral but there are also irregularities. The Republican Party appears on TV 10-30 times more often than the others. Moreover, the reports on the Republican Party are longer and are shown in the beginning of the news shows. The ARF Dashnaktsutyun is the second. The Bargavach Hayastan Party is certainly the third. However, according to the results of the monitoring, the H1 Channel does not cover the election actively, at the same time, the reports and the speech of hosts about the opposition contain irony. “H1 provided to all the parties as much airtime as the ALM channel to the People’s Party.” 93 percent of the airtime of the People’s Party is provided by the ALM channel. It is impossible to get deep and detailed information on the other forces on ALM, the monitoring concluded. In the monitored newspapers the Republican Party appears most frequently, then the Bargavach Party and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun.
Armenia Channel provides 3 times less time for the coverage of the election. H2 Channel and Armenia set such high prices on political advertisement that there is no political advertisement on these channels. Political advertisement is expensive in all the TV companies, which allows concluding that “a prearranged and controlled policy is conducted”. After the article in the Golos Armenia about the private talk of Arthur Baghdasaryan, the leader of the Orinats Yerkir Party, with the official of the U.K. Embassy 10 negative reports on the Orinats Yerkir Party were observed on TV, including 6 on this talk. According to Boris Navasardyan, the chair of Yerevan Press Club, it is an order of a definite political force rather than a controlled policy against the Orinats Yerkir Party.
On Yerkir Media the ARF Dashnaktsutyun appears more frequently. Meanwhile, on Kentron on April 18-23 the ARF Dashnaktsutyun was mentioned most of all, then the Republican Party, and then only the Bargavach Hayastan Party.
