FORMER MAYOR OF AKHALKALAKI WAS ARRESTED

Yesterday at 10 o’clock in the evening Nairi Iritsyan, representative of the regional council of Akhalkalaki, member of the United Javakheti Democratic Alliance, and Arthur Poghosyan, an activist of the same alliance, Javakhq Info reported.
A few hours later they were transferred to Akhaltskha, the administrative center of Samtskhe-Javakheti.
The rumored reason for the arrest is the incident invovling the abovementioned people and the chauffer of the district attorney of Akhalkalaki.
Javakhq Info has learned that at about 7 o’clock in the evening the driver of the district attorney ran down Andranik Abelyan, a member of United Javakheti. The witnesses said the driver and several other people in the car did not take the injured person to hospital and fought with Nairi Iritsyan, Arthur Poghosyan and other persons who came to help.
Earlier in 2007 the Georgian legislature had sentenced Arthur Poghosyan to 2 years on probe and fined 2000 laris (about 1200 U.S. dollars) for active participation in the protest against power outages.
Nairi Iritsyan was the mayor of Akhalkalaki in 2003-2006, is a co-founder of United Javakheti Democratic Alliance. In the local election in 2006 he defeated the candidate of the majority party, getting 70 percent of votes.
