A PARTY WITH A NEW IMAGE
- What is underway in the political sphere in Armenia is the change that was expected after the death of Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan. Now it is already obvious that his disappearance has changed the balance of the government in favor of the Republican Party. Many, especially those Republicans who were from the so-called Andranik Margaryan’s team may wonder that if the death of the prime minister changed the balance in favor of the Republican Party, it turns out that Andranik Margaryan prevented the Republican from absolute power. Yes, it is true, although it sounds strange. Andranik Margaryan had several reasons to prevent it. First, he apparently realized that there were too many opportunists in the Republican Party who take an oath of loyalty to the party but tomorrow they may easily commit to the opposite ideology. The leader of the party realized that with such quality the Republican Party was not ready for absolute power because such a party and government would denigrate each other, and eventually there would be neither a party nor a government. Therefore, the deceased prime minister was much more moderate with regard to the home political processes and conducted a more moderate policy.

The second reason that made Andranik Margaryan suppress the ambitions of the Republican Party was the diarchy in the party which emerged after July 22. The problem is that Serge Sargsyan who joined the party triumphantly would certainly ascribe all success after July 22 to himself and gradually take the party under his wing. In this case, it is clear why Andranik Margaryan preferred balancing between Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan and a relative victory in the parliamentary election, not an absolute victory for the Republicans to see that Serge Sargsyan could not give the Republican Party more than its leader for so many years. Andranik Margaryan would thereby keep not only the party but also his leading role in the party. However, his untimely death shuffled the cards and made Serge Sargsyan take crucial steps. The problem is not that the gateway opened up for the prime minister to take the entire party and also power at once. Simply Serge Sargsyan did not have another way out but to lead the Republican Party to absolute power, otherwise doubts about Serge Sargsyan’s abilities would occur inside the party. When Andranik Margaryan was alive, relative success of Serge Sargsyan would be easy to justify with the moderate policy of Andranik Margaryan, now he has nothing to say, he has no excuse why he could not lead the Republican Party to absolute majority. And if the prime minister was unable, it is beyond doubt that after the parliamentary election the party would go to Robert Kocharyan. Why? Because it will never go to Shavarsh Kocharyan. However, perhaps it would be a better option than if it stayed with Serge Sargsyan or Robert Kocharyan because in this case Vazgen Manukyan’s electorate might vote for the Republican Party. If we trust Aaron Adibekyan’s methodology, Vazgen Manukyan’s electorate goes to Shavarsh Kocharyan, and if the Republican Party goes to him, naturally Vazgen Manukyan’s voters will vote for the Republican Party. And it is not bad because in all the other cases the Republican Party moves downward. Serge Sargsyan needs the party to have parliament majority. After having it he will face the necessity for a new political support because in assuring absolute majority for Serge Sargsyan in the parliamentary election the Republican Party’s reputation will be damaged to the point that it will become useless for the presidential election. Therefore, it is possible that after May 12 Serge Sargsyan will possible try to separate from the Republican Party or to create a Republican Party with an absolutely new image.
