WHEN RIVERS GET TIRED OF RESISTING
In a round-table meeting at the UN Yerevan office on March 22, which is the international water day on the calendar of the UN, Yuri Javadyan, the director of Armwaterproject Institute, and Irina Ghukasyan, the scientific director of the Institute of Water Ecology and Fish Farming, stated that the consumption of water in our country grows annually, 4.9 billion cu m in 2005 against 3.8 billion in 1999. It is highly urgent to adopt a policy of preservation and renew freshwater reserves, build reservoirs, reconstruct the water supply systems and filter stations, and guarantee a sustainable use of natural resources. Experts say if reservoirs are built, it will be possible to store 4.5-5 billion cu m water and sustain the region’s development because water will flow from mountains, including from Lake Sevan by natural pressure and reach the users. If the level of water in Sevan rises by 6 meters, “it will start working”. And if we continue to pollute water, Armenia which has no water problem now will lack 700 million cu m water in 2025.
80 percent of our water resources flow to Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran. However, it will not free us from the duty of sustainable use of water resources. Experts remind that in some countries drinking water is more expensive than oil and warn that without adequate attention this wealth flows out of Armenia. In separate cases, we are not to blame. In 2003 14 metric tons of lead fell on Armenia with rains, our share is 0. In 2003 our share of the 45 thousand metric tons of sulfur was 5 percent. 49 percent came from Turkey with winds. Our fault is destruction of forests which promotes desertification. The factories pour wastes, people throw refuse into the rivers.
Experts say no efforts are made against pollution, but they warn: “They continue to pollute rivers, and it is not clear when the river will get tired of resisting.”
