- When we asked what kind of energy diversification this is when Iran-Armenia is also given to the Russians, the Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanyan made a rather interesting statement. He said diversification is not who controls your energy sources but where these sources come from. Perhaps this is not only Vardan Oskanyan’s opinion but the opinion of the ruling elite of Armenia, because so far none of the outstanding representatives of the elite has voiced concern about the prospects of Russian control. Moreover, they have made sufficient efforts to bring it into being. And now it takes an official statement only to put the gas pipeline into the balance bag of our “elder brother”. They say, however, that it is not difficult to find a statement whereas diversification perhaps never ever will be found, especially with the government’s idea of this notion.
In fact, official Yerevan thinks diversification should be viewed geographically. This shows that our elite has psychological complexes. For the time being, however, it is necessary to find out why we need the pipeline of Iran. Presently we get gas from Russia via Georgia. We needed the pipeline of Iran as an alternative source because Armenia lacks another source in case the northern pipeline is damaged. Besides this, we need an alternative to the Russian energy dominance over Armenia. We need at least one energy source we would control. If for us it is enough to have a second pipeline and it is not important that the Russians control it, it means we wanted an alternative to the Georgian route rather than to the Russian supply.
This is evidence that the ruling elite in Armenia suffers from psychological complexes, which is a social syndrome. In Armenia they continue to disbelieve that Russia may ever use sanctions against Armenia, therefore energy diversification should be viewed in the context of alternative supply. We do not take into account the history. We do not take into account the recent events: aggression of skinheads, the blocking of Verin Lars, reluctance to “forgeve us oure detters”. An excuse is always found which justifies the almost slavish devotion when no Russian wish lasts for more than a few days, and they immediately come true.
It should be noted, however, that Armenia had to fulfill Russia’s demand and give the Iranian pipeline as well. The problem is not only that thus the ruling elite expect loyalty in the parliamentary election. Another problem is that Russia controls the entire gas supply system of Armenia in the face of Armrusgasard, which is considered as an Armenian company, but Gazprom holds almost 2/3 of its stocks. In addition, Gazprom is likely to increase its stocks in the company, whereas the Armenian government is looking for logical excuses instead of making real efforts in this direction. In other words, it is all the same, for we will have to use the gas supply system owned by the Russians to use the Iranian gas. Consequently, a few more kilometers make no difference because we have given our all to the Russians. Consequently, we need a new body although the past and the present lessons show that the brain is important of all.
