WE CANNOT ACCUSE OUR CHESS PLAYERS WE MAY ONLY SYMPATHIZE WITH THEM
The Armenian nation, especially the Armenians who celebrated at the Square of Freedom the victory of the men’s chess team can still remember the joy and inspiration that the Armenian chess players gave to all of us winning the Olympic gold in Torino. On that summer night in Yerevan the people gathered at the Square of Freedom celebrated perhaps our most important achievement after the victory in the war in Karabakh. These two victories which cannot be compared by their scope and importance had one thing in common: they got a national perception. Like the soldiers and the peaceful population celebrating the capture of Shushi had forgotten about party affiliation or background, the citizens dancing at the Square of Freedom on the summer night had forgotten about politics, parties, officials combining public, party and regional posts. Like the soldiers, the chess players managed to do an almost impossible thing – bring people together and “make” them think and feel similarly. This fact makes what happened afterwards more painful. The same people who brought people together with their victory went on to divide people. Like the “guilty” of the victory in Karabakh misappropriated their victory, turning it into estates and mandates, insignia and wholesale and retail trade of the public property, the chess champions put out their victory to sale and endorsed the Republicans in the upcoming election.
It is not a surprise, of course, that the chess players support a political force the president of the federation Serge Sargsyan is a member. After all, they are also citizens and must support someone, especially that someone helped them become Olympic champions. But was it necessary that the chess team announce it with a month to go before the election, the election campaign. How about their weapon, the mind, they announce so cheerfully from the ad on Mashtots Avenue? Does one need to have a great mind to understand that the public is interested in new successful performance of the chess team rather than their political orientation? Does one need to have a great mind to understand that in the face of our chess players the public wants to see winners and not sellers of their victory to the Republican Party because they can see sellers everywhere and every day, and are tired of this total trade. The public was encouraged by the chess victory because they saw it is possible to win in a fair, honest and disinterested way. Meanwhile, they show that it is necessary to pay for everything, including the Olympic gold and the firework at night. After all, Serge Sargsyan was not wasting money taking the chess players from city to city, from country to country where they were publicly given envelopes with money, as it now became clear, for future political technology. Everything is over. The Olympic gold has turned into election copper. However, the winners are not judged because they have the right to handle their victory the way they want. Our Constitution provides for the right for property, of course, if the government does not expropriate it. Consequently, we cannot accuse our chess players, we may only sympathize with them, like all the other citizens who have suffered from expropriation.
