BABAJANYAN’S LAWYER APPEALED TO COURT OF CASSATION
Zaruhi Postanjyan and Haik Alumyan, the attorneys of the editor of the Time Yerevan Daily, told news reporters January 31 they had appealed to the Court of Cassation and on February 1 it will become clear if the court will hear the case. Arman Babajanyan was sentenced to four years for forging documents and avoiding military service by the first instance court. The Court of Appeal replaced the punishment with a milder sentence of 3.5 years. Arman Babajanyan has also appealed to the Ministry of Defense of Armenia to apply the law which provides for stopping prosecution of persons aged 27, who avoided military service in 1993-2005.
Arman Babajanyan’s attorney Zaruhi Postanjyan is dissatisfied because the ministry of defense did not respond to the application of his defendant. The head of the legal department of the ministry of defense sent a note dated January 22 to Postanjyan’s lawyers that there was a verdict on Arman Babajanyan, and the Ministry of Defense was not authorized to meet his application. Zaruhi Postanjyan says if there is an application, the ministry of defense should have met it.
