ELECTORAL CODE PLUS POLITICAL WILL

Speaker Tigran Torosyan stated in a news conference on January 29 that it is not correct to speak about guarantees of a fair election. “The amendments to the Constitution and the Electoral Code are a very good basis, if political will adds to this, we will be able to hold a compliant election.” All the political forces should display will, both the opposition and the government, Tigran Torosyan says, because “every political party is responsible for the events taking place in the country.”
However, Tigran Torosyan declines to say why the pro-government forces rejected the offer of a few opposition forces to include an equal number of oppositionist and pro-government members in the electoral commissions. He states, however, that his colleagues members of parliament support his proposal to set up a working group of members of parlaiment to react to, coordinate undesirable phenomena during the election and set up ties between the observers.
If the election is not compliant, it will not be fatal, but Armenia will miss a crucial chance for development, Tigran Torosyan states. The bad conduct of the election is not in the interests of any political force, Tigran Torosyan says.
