HEARING OF CHAKHALYAN’S CASE WAS DELAYED
The hearing of the case of Vahagn Chakhalyan, the co-chair of the United Javakheti Organization at the Court of Appeal was appointed on January 29 but was delayed until February 19. The reason is that Vahagn Chakhalyan was deported from Armenia and cannot show up at the trial. Vahagn Chakhalyan’s lawyer says the Court of Appeal had to make efforts to enable Vahagn Chakhalyan to arrive in Armenia legally. However, the justice stated in the first hearing that they were unaware of Chakhalyan’s deportation, although the lawyer says it was mentioned in the appeal in detail. The court even failed to send a notice paper to Vahagn Chakhalyan. Vahagn Chakhalyan sent a telegram to the Court of Appeal which informed that he had learned about his trial from the media and cannot show up at the hearing since he cannot arrive in Armenia legally. Tigran Hairapetyan, Chakhalyan’s attorney, made a statement on the behavior of the court during the hearing on January 29. The Court of Appeal promised to take measures to enable Vahagn Chakhalyan to arrive in Armenia legally. Such measures are cancellation of the decision on deportation or request with the prime minister because he has the right to reconsider a decision, or a request with the chief of the Police who can give Chakhalyan permission for entry. However, according to the lawyer, the last option is humiliating for the court because the court ranks higher than the police.
