ARMY AND VICTORY ARE DIFFERENT THINGS
- Every citizen of Armenia is certainly proud of the existence of the national army, especially when this army is considered as a triumphant army. Perhaps it is natural that the axis of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the army, media and TV reports is the victory of our army. It is natural because our army was created along with this victory, but the celebration is a moment that passes and the first post-celebration idea that occurs is what the core of the celebration would be if the army did not win the war in Karabakh. What would be there if there were no victory? After all, nobody is insured against victory and failure, especially that we have seen a great number of defeats in our history. Consequently, even though this situation if not desirable, it is interesting how the anniversary of the army would be celebrated if it had not won the war. The answer to this question may reveal the depth of the perception of the notion of army. Presently, the impression is that we are happy about the fact that our army won 15 years ago rather than its 15 years of existence. In other words, army means victory to us. This can cause a major confusion. This confusion leads to different perceptions of the problem. When we speak about victory, at a distance of 15 years it becomes an abstract notion and implies a more emotive perception. The army is a concrete thing, which requires a highly pragmatic, rational approach free of emotion. And as the problem of the army is viewed from this aspect, we see that many words uttered during the celebration of the ary are full of pathos and are devoid of rationality. These words exaggerate the importance of the army in the life of our society. These pronouncements are based on approaches which are false and upside down. Their content sets the army prior to the state. Meanwhile, the army is the product of the state. Not more. Army is not a guarantee of state, state is the guarantee of army. Consequently, the existence of the army should be explained by the existence of the state, which means that the state of the army reflects that of the state.
Meanwhile, in this sense there is little we can be proud of. Our state is described by electoral fraud, violated human dignity and rights, pseudo-national values, which are dictated by the instinct of self-protection of the ruling regime but never the national self-consciousness. This makes think how the national army can protect an Armenian, a citizen of Armenia from external aggression if the same citizen of Armenia is not protected inside the country, if this ordinary person can be humiliated by the same officials, generals uttering fiery speeches about the army and the state, their sons, bodyguards, or their pageboys who will get away with it. And finally, there is no answer to a very important question – what will protect the national army? What do we mean when we speak about Armenia? What values are implied by the notion of Armenia, freedom or the rule of petty kings, justice or a shelter of corrupton, human rights or violation of the rights of the weak by the strong, dignified existence in the Homeland or an intensifying feeling that you do not belong to your native country? The future of the army also depends on the answer to these questions. Because the strength of the army is also the values it defends.
