MATAGHIS CASE TAKES NEW TURN
The case of the murder of two servicemen of the military unit of Mataghis Roman Yeghiazaryan and Hovsep Mkrtumyan may take a new turn. Three servicemen of the same military unit were indicted in 2003, Razmik Musayelyan, Musa Serobyan and Arayik Zalyan. The first instance court sentenced them to 15 years. The parents of the killed soldiers appealed to the Court of Appeal which replaced 15 years with a life sentence. However, in 2006 the relatives of the convicts appealed to the Court of Cassation, which dismissed charges since there was not enough evidence.
On January 25, a month later the mother and uncle of killed Roman Yeghiazaryan stated at the Pastark Club that the Court of Cassation made an unfair decision and dismissed charges on the guilty. Roman Yeghiazaryan’s uncle stated that the three released servicemen were the killers.
“Razmik Sargsyan, Musa Serobyan and Arayik Zalyan killed our children, who were released by the Court of Cassation without grounds,” Arthur Yeghiazaryan says. He cannot explain why the three servicemen were first convicted, whereas the Court of Cassation passed another verdict. Roman Yeghiazaryan’s relatives say the judges of the Court of Cassation were from Gyumri. One of the convicts Razmik Sargsyan is also from Gyumri. Arthur Yeghiazaryan believes that the three servicemen killed considering the investigation.
“Who could describe who hit and where? Only the killer. Because there was a conclusion of the forensic expert before the interrogation of Razmik Sargsyan that he was hacked to death with a hard and blunt object. Razmik Sargsyan tells one by one, on TV, they showed on the Zinuzh program too, and Razmik Sargsyan asked for a cigarette from Hakobyan Armen, smoked and told calmly with the face of a murderer, how he had killed and thrown the body into the canal,” Arthur Yeghiazaryan said.
The relatives and lawyers of the soldiers who were convicted but released by the court of cassation believe that their sons and defendants are innocent and were not involved in the murder. The charges were based on Razmik Sargsyan’s evidence he gave after he was tortured. The evidence that came in the beginning of the investigation pointed to Ivan Grigoryan, the commander of the military unit of Mataghis. The lawyers say new groundless evidence was acquired through torture to convict these three servicemen.
Roman Yeghiazaryan’s uncle says he does not doubt for a moment that his commander Ivan Grigoryan is innocent. He says they are satisfied with the commander. Whereas he is likely to sue the chief justice of the Court of Cassation and the judges who dismissed charges on servicemen sentenced for life. He does not know yet but he is going to appeal to everyone, the president of Armenia, the Attorney General. Everywhere that is possible.
It is interesting that the parents of the other killed serviceman Hovsep Mkrtumyan do not complain of the decision of the Court of Cassation. However, they had complained of the light sentence of the first instance court. Arthur Yeghiazaryan thinks it is strange that they complained of a light sentence but are not complaining of the decision on dismissing the case. However, he says it is Hovsep Mkrtumyan’s parents’ problem, and the relatives of Roman Yeghiazaryan will not sell the blood of their son.
