IS PRESIDENT’S ELDER SON SERVING IN THE ARMY?
- The recent news conference of the Armenian minister of defense on January 19 at the Regnum News Agency did not pass by the family of the president of Armenia, namely the military service of Robert Kocharyan’s sons. There is news that Robert Kocharyan’s younger son, who is formally in military service, very seldom or almost never visits the military unit, instead he often is seen at expensive clubs in Yerevan and abroad. And to get perhaps the most reliable information on these rumors, the news reporters inquired from the minister of defense whether the younger son of the president of Armenia serves in the Armed Forces of Armenia and is always at the military unit.

For whatever reason, Serge Sargsyan decided that he should answer not only about the younger son of Robert Kocharyan but also the president’s elder son Sedrak Kocharyan, though the news reporters had not asked about him.
“Both sons of the president are serving in the army, and there is no problem related to this,” the defense minister said. But there is a problem and a rather interesting problem we run into as soon as we visit the webpage of the president of Armenia and get acquainted with the biography of his family, namely his sons. It is written in Levon Robert Kocharyan’s biography that he has a Bachelor’s decree and is now serving in the army. Everything seems to be OK with him if we believe Serge Sargsyan, who says that Levon Kocharyan is serving in the military unit and not in clubs. Meanwhile, Sedrak Robert Kocharyan’s biography and Serge Azat Sargsyan’s comment contradict. The problem is that according to Sedrak Kocharyan’s biography, Sedrak Kocharyan has a Master’s degree and works in the banking system. Serge Sargsyan says the president’s elder son is serving in the army.
Of course, the minister of defense may not be aware that Sedrak Kocharyan is serving in the army. After all, Serge Sargsyan cannot know everything. But if he has wrong information on Sedrak Kocharyan’s military service, is there a guarantee that Serge Sargsyan’s information on Levon Kocharyan’s military service is reliable. If the minister does not know that one son of the president is not serving in the army, does he know if the president’s younger son is serving in the army and in what military unit? Or if the elder son of the president works, how does he manage to work in the banking system? It is not clear which structural reform in the public administration system included the banking system in the Armed Forces of Armenia, and which policy provides for considering work in the banking system as military service. Maybe it is high time to inform the public about this reform? Perhaps most people would like to serve in the army in the banking system. In this case, young men would even agree to serve in the army for life.
