HATRED IS BORN WHEN THERE IS NO COMMON SENSE
- Besides being a human tragedy the assassination of Hrant Dink once again discovered our national tragedy of never learning from anything, never perceiving anything consciously and never going deeper into things. The death of Dink gave rise to another anti-Turkish hysteria in Armenia. If we sum up the reaction of the political, scientific, cultural and public sets in once sentence, despite singular exceptions, it derives from the national formula “a Turk is a Turk”, and every attempt to overcome it is prevented by rough interference of the state propaganda. Dink’s assassination was a real tragedy, first of all a human tragedy, a national tragedy because the Armenian community in Turkey orphaned, losing perhaps its bravest, the most progressive representative, who is, most importantly, free from national complexes.

The loss of these individuals first strikes the process of freeing the nation from complexes and solving national problems through common sense, and the chances for success became fewer by one. It does not matter for whom hatred is. Even if it had a positive impact, its destructive energy is more powerful and a thousand times more destructive. Hatred paralyzes common sense. Whereas common sense, especially when an outstanding Armenian national figure died, could be the most useful thing. Let us think who needed his death. Let us think whether they wanted to settle accounts with the Armenians or settle accounts once again with the Turkish society and official Ankara. Are they trying to settle the internal problems of Turkey through the Armenians, or did Dink become the victim of a global geopolitical game? And is it possible that the anti-Turkish hysteria is helpful for this game and justifies the estimations of the organizers?
Without any suggestions, efforts to seek any answer, or at least make a guess, the official propaganda has stepped up an anti-Turkish hysteria through journalists, political scientists, scientists, the intelligentsia, which is, at least presently, devoid of an element of common sense. Did the murder of the film director in Amsterdam, who was killed because he had made a film on women in Islam, describe the Dutch society? Were the murder of Prime Minister Palmet and several decades later the murder of Foreign Minister Lind an indicator of a sick and barbaric society? Or how about the murders reported in Armenia, which culminated in October 27, and with the mildest wording by far cannot even be compared with the assassination of Dink? Are these murders an indicator of the barbaric nature of the Armenians? Do they mean that the Armenian civilization cannot be admitted to the European family and does not believe humanitarian values?
Or when in Armenia they spread, back up and use every opportunity to instill in the generation that “a Turk is a Turk”, do they also mean the Turks who were Dink’s friends, and voiced protest several minutes after the assassination and declared that Dink is important and “they all are Armenian and Hrant Dink”. Are these Turks also “Turks”? After all, they are also Turks and maybe they are the real Turks. If Armenian logic suggests that they are not Turks, a Turk cannot condemn a murder, a Turk cannot be a supporter, a friend and have compassion for an Armenian. Does the Armenian intelligentsia, who are said to be the part of the nation who think, realize that with their anti-Turkish hysteria they insult thousands of Turks mourning for the death of Dink, his Turkish friends? Or maybe for these preachers Turks, Armenians, and even Dink are not important, the opportunity of opening mouths once again is open, for at last whatever would come out of it would be up to date.
This may seem to be an effort to defend the Turks. Especially in the light of the official propaganda. However, the problem is not to care for Turks but for us and our world view which would not change. What is the goal of this hysteria? If the goal is to honor the memory of Dink, is it the most honest way to do it? To honor the memory, it is necessary to be in harmony with the deceased. And is this hysteria in harmony with Dink’s ideas who wanted to help change the consciousness of the Turkish society and thereby reach the establishment of the historical truth that two neighbor peoples cannot go on to live with hatred for one another. And the protest that followed his death, unfortunately, showed that Dink had managed to do a lot of things. Did they kill Dink knowing that we would bury his achievements?
