ARMENIAN LOBBY SHOULD REALIZE ARMENIA HAS OTHER NATIONAL INTERESTS
- The Democratic majority of the U.S. Congress, which threatened to bar Bush’s initiative to send more force to Iraq, seems to be giving up. But instead of the bill the Democrats have worked out a resolution condemning Bush’s step, and if the resolution is adopted, it will not necessarily be enforced. In other words, we deal with an example when the Democratic majority spoke louder than its actions. Of course, despite the geopolitical lining of the problem of Iraq, this episode of the House-Bush relation is a matter of domestic policy. But it could be educational for the Armenians in Armenia and the United States who expect that the Democrats will adopt a resolution condemning the Genocide of the Armenians.
The developments related to sending force to Iraq show that the Democrats seem to be likely to promise more than they can do. And it means that unlike the Republicans the Democrats can raise the issue during the meeting of the House but everything will end thus. It will be viewed as a great achievement of the Armenian lobby which is said to have become so strong that if it fails to make Serge Sargsyan president of Armenia in 2008, in the same year it will make him president of the United States. On the other hand, if having the House discuss the “Armenian resolution” is considered as an achievement is the same as “eating carrots if there is no other fruit.”
In reality, the Armenian lobby in American should realize that if they cannot understand that Armenia has other national interests, it does not mean that the Democrats of the House will overlook the national interest of the United States. For instance, although the war in Iraq seems to have no meaning and prospects, they nevertheless imagined that presently leaving Iraq is not in the interests of the United States. Moreover, the interests of the United States necessitates sending more force to Iraq, considering the process underway in the region, Turkey’s claims to Kurds, the uncertainty over the nuclear problem of Iran. Finally, no Democrat would agree to reign over ruins, and the problem is that the notion of the United States is not confined to the administrative area of this country but includes the administrative map of the world to different scopes. Consequently, there are problems the Democrats would be happy to have solved through the Republicans, and use them to get more political dividends both at home and among foreign partners, who disapprove the aggressive foreign policy of the Republicans.
Over this period the Armenians have focused on raising the issue of the Genocide in the world, and in such a powerful country as America the entire lobbist resource was used for this problem, and the other problems are viewed in this light, such as the appointment of a U.S. ambassador to Armenia. Armenia seems to have no other expectation from the United States but pronouncing the word “Genocide”. As if we have solved all our urgent problems successfully, and the historical and moral question has been made our primary foreign political problem.
