CORRUPTION AND MISCONDUCT IS REAL THREAT
- 2007 is a pre-election year in Armenia and Turkey. In the upcoming Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections the Armenian issue will not be one of the key issues. However, the elections can be crucial to the Turkish-Armenian relations. The author of this opinion is the American Armenian analyst Richard Giragossian who stated January 15 at the Friday Club that the level of democracies and promotion of democracy in both countries is crucial to the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations.
The analyst stated with regard to the Armenian election that legitimacy will be crucial. A fundamental improvement compared with the previous election is necessary because institutions must be established in Armenia, not only persons, and this is the only way, he said. According to him, this will enable Armenia to have more tangible levers and build a new relation with neighbors. Richard Giragossian reminded that the EU and the United States made clear to Armenia that they will not tolerate election fraud and be as patient as before.

Some branches of the Armenian economy may suffer in the beginning, but the monopolies will have to face up to growing competition, Richard Giragossian says. He thinks the worst threat against the national security of Armenia comes from corruption and misconduct rather than Turkey and Azerbaijan.
