CONFERENCE WITH COPIED SPEECHES
- “It is possible to say a lot about the Diaspora-Armenia conference. The topics are good, there is a lot to say, but this is the third conference and there is no difference compared with the first conference. No decision, no consistency,” says Oshin Keshishian, Editor-in-Chief of the Los Angeles-based Armenian Observer Newspaper, who took part in the two pan-Armenian events in Armenia in September, the third Armenia-Diaspora conference and the third Armenia-Diaspora information forum. On September 25 Oshin Keshinian was the guest of the National Press Club, who said that the information forum produced more practical and tangible results than the Armenia-Diaspora conference.
“You don’t feel that you are attending something of importance. Unfortunately, this is what I feel. They are offended but what shall we do? We must call white white and black black. Besides, all the speeches on the first day were copied out. It is the same thing all the time,” says Oshin Keshishian in evaluating the third conference. According to him, the Armenia-Diaspora conferences are devoid of a successive logic.
“The first conference had one topic, the second had another, the third had quite another one. Dear government, has the reconstruction of villages just occurred to you? Have you just realized that villages are important. And if the villages are important, as our minister Oskanyan announced, they have found sponsors for the villages. Well, in this case, why are you holding a meeting, give the money and reconstruct the villages,” says Oshin Keshishian. He was also dissatisfied with the organization in the sense that the debates pursued formal balance rather than specialized work. “In other words, when a Dashnak spoke, then the floor would be taken over to a Ramkavar and a Henchak. Why? If we have a specific topic, and if the person is a professional economist, sociologist, let him speak. For instance, if someone from the red cross speaks, the blue cross should also speak. This balance is a funny thing,” says Oshin Keshishian. According to him, if there are five specialists on one issue and all of them are members of the same political party, this should not prevent them from becoming involved because they are competent about the issue.
The Editor-in-Chief of the Armenian Observer thinks that it is not expedient to organize Armenia-Diaspora conference at all because there are no organizations which implement its decisions or projects. “I do not think that it is necessary to hold an Armenia-Diaspora meeting. In this sense, Armenia is a state, it has laws, and it can make do one thing or another. If a decision is adopted today, who in Los Angeles will carry it out? There is not an organization. Besides, the first meeting was a little different because there were representatives from both parties in the organizational committee. In the past two conferences there were no representatives of the Diaspora. And they did not ask either what we would like to discuss, the agenda. You come, this is the topic, that’s all,” says Oshin Keshishian.
Besides, he thinks it should be noted that a 1000-person meeting cannot produce real results because in reality the Diaspora is multi-layer and very diverse. Oshin Keshishian says the American Armenians, the French Armenians, the Iranian Armenians and the Armenian citizens of other countries have different approaches to different problems, each has a different perception and world view, in their countries they have different levers of solving problems, coming in touch with government agencies. Consequently, he thinks it is necessary to work with each of them in accordance with the situation and the possibilities, which could be carried out without any conferences.
