WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE CRU PARTY
- There would be nothing special about the Constitutional Right Union’s 17th conference on September 16 but five days before the conference the director of the Iravunk, the official newspaper of the political party had been expelled from the party, and on the eve the party activities of the deputy leader of the party, the chair of the editorial board of the Iravunk had been suspended. In the meeting of the representatives of the CRU, 30 minutes before the conference, the commission gave its conclusion, according to which the decisions concerning the two members were against the bylaws of the party. It is notable that Hrant Khachatryan and his supporters did not utter a single word that was negative or inappropriate. Moreover, they encouraged one another. On seeing this some people said in whisper or half-whisper that the party members, who have become engaged in someone else’s game, are internally resisting to the rules of the game that are strange to them.
Hrant Khachatryan thinks the atmosphere inside the political party is unhealthy, which was caused by impunity, and it is necessary to apply sanctions for the sake of security of the political party and its members. Haik Babukhanyan, who agreed that the CRU is having hard times, asserted that since early this year he has felt pressure when he tried to activate one link of the party or another, such as the leadership, the executive body, etc.
Recognizing Haik Babukhanyan’s great contribution to the establishment of the political party, the Iravunk, the society and the state, the CRU decided not to publish the reason for the punishment. In the conference, however, the state of things was different, for it became clear that Haik Babukhanyan boycotted the board of the CRU and wants to be the sole leader of the party. Haik Babukhanyan opened other brackets as well. He says the question of replacing the board of the official newspaper of the political party the Iravunk, namely Haik Babukhanyan and Hovanes Galajyan, occurred when “we clashed with Sashik” [Sashik is the brother of Serge Sargsyan – ed.]. Plus Haik Babukhanyan’s open letter to Serge Sargsyan published in the Iravunk. Haik Babukhanyan’s supporters say it was Serge Sargsyan’s order to isolate them. Some people also say there is pressure on Hrant Khachatryan using the fact that his son is in the army. Do what we want or your son will be having problems, he was told by the Command of the Army. Hrant Khachatryan said in an interview with the Lragir that this is slander. “My son’s service is excellent, and I am very sorry about such rumors.” Hrant Khachatryan declined to say who, in his opinion, guided Haik Babukhanyan but he repeated for several times that since the political party was established 18 years ago it has been fighting lie, fraud and violence. “And if Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Vano Siradeghyan, Vazgen Manukyan, Robert Kocharyan or Serge Sargsyan became our target, it means they instigated lie, fraud and violence.” Probably, everything would end up peacefully if money was not touched upon. Hrant Khachatryan’s supporter, a relation of his, announced that there is abuse of millions connected with the Iravunk. Haik Babukhanyan proposed an audit, and the accountant of the newspaper, his supporter, announced that Haik Babukhanyan did not sign to any document. “Only a fool like me signs. Finita la comedia. It appears I was Fux for all this time. Someone else does, I go to prison. My greatest political project crashed. On establishing the CRU we planned to have Haik Babukhanyan become foreign minister in 15 years,” announced Hrant Khachatryan and left. The conference continues. Haik Babukhanyan named Hrant Khachatryan as the leader or the honorary leader of the CRU. Both the supporters of Hrant Khachatryan and Haik Babukhanyan were elected members of the board of the political party.
On leaving Hrant Khachatryan told news reporters that Haik Babukhanyan had offered him a deal on the previous day. “Why do you care for others? We’ll arrange it all together. I told him to get out.” “They threatened me that I would see the staff of the leadership and I would have to resign. I said no. I knew the election would be controlled from the outside,” insists Hrant Khachatryan.
