High Time to Orient

The speeches delivered by the newly elected President Serge Sargsyan and his main rival Levon Ter-Petrosyan during the two rallies on February 26 finally clarified the internal political partition.
They are two diametrically different and even contradictory ideological-political statements, proposals and solutions, that is why not only do they need complete analyses, but also political evaluation by the representatives of all the parties, social organizations and intellectuals.
It is impossible to postpone the moment of orientation, because the country is facing an obvious dilemma and the coming developments will “touch” not only the political powers but also each citizen of Armenia.
After all the existing political confrontation can’t last forever. The solution of the post-election processes is drawing nearer.
The problems is, the approaches of the two sides to the peaceful solution of the issue is yet again diametrically different, which were manifested in the announcement made by Serge Sargsyan in the Republic Square and Levon Ter-Petrosyan in the Theatrical Square. Let’s compare the viewpoints of the two sides and the concrete solutions based on them.
Serge Sargsyan’s speech was based on the creation of the atmosphere of internal solidarity, mutual tolerance, and the solution of the problem by means of a dialogue. He appealed to his supporters to be well conscious of the fact that their brothers and sisters have gathered in the other square and that we shouldn’t separate people into relatives and strangers.
Meanwhile, for the recent days Levon Ter-Petrosyan is persistently announcing that those who refuse to join his rallies are froths and traitors. Which means one of the sides comes out from the position of overcoming “the artificial separation imposed upon our people”, whereas the other side thrusts a wedge in the society with his slogan “those who are not with us, they are against us”.
A question arises here, why do the other political powers and the majority of society keep silent? According to the ex-President those who don’t participate in his rallies are in the list of “froths” and “traitors”.
Based on the ideological-political principle of valuing national unity and solidarity in his speech Serge Sargsyan proposed the mechanisms to put into action these principles: “From this high tribune I appeal to all ex-presidential candidates and the political powers supporting them, let’s cooperate. Right up to the formation of coalition government. One of my goals is to use all the constructive powers in favor of Armenia’s development.”
Which means the presidential candidate who won at the first stage of the elections, put aside the fact that the majority in the National Assembly supports him and proposed his ex-rivals to form coalition.
What does Levon Ter-Petrosyan propose? The same day, on February 26, commenting on the arrest of his supporters the former President clearly announced that these people would make part of the government formed by him, thus trying to involve more political figures in actions that would lead to arrest, which later will give them a big chance to hold posts. This new manifestation of “revolutionary corruption” should be included in many textbooks. It is terrible even to imagine the government, which the former President is going to form.
It is noteworthy that unlike LTP’s “love confession” and the attempts to attract many entrepreneurs and oligarchs, in his February 26 speech Serge Sargsyan announced that he is going to eliminate all the evil phenomena, such as the attempts to evade tax. This is no more than being well conscious of the responsibility shouldered by the newly elected President. And this announcement is made at the very moment when the rival leader is trying to expand his camp by all the possible and impossible means.
So, it turns out that one of the political camps is doing its best to re-establish the atmosphere of unity and solidarity in the country and the other camp views its success in the deterioration of the before mentioned.
One side proposes the powers having participated in the elections to form a coalition government and the other appeals to the political powers to take illegal steps, to be arrested, so that later they will gain high posts.
One – promises to get rid of “oligarch system”, the other speaks about corruption and lawlessness meanwhile attracting the oligarchs.
We can bring more and more comparisons, but we must record that everything depends on the stance of other political powers and society towards the two political camps, because the passiveness towards similar apparent partitions lifts the danger of solving the confrontation by non-political methods.
Thus all the political powers and figures who instead of condemning the attempts to split the nation and labeling them as traitors, quietly wait for the non-political solution of the confrontation, objectively contribute to the ripening of this scenario.
