ROBERT KOCHARYAN’S MESSAGE
Concerning the Presidential Elections
Dear compatriots,
The Presidential Elections of the Republic of Armenia were accomplished on February 19, 2008. The elections were free and transparent, in conformity with the Legislation of the Republic of Armenia and in harmony with the spirit of the international obligations committed by Armenia. I express my thankfulness to all the members of the electoral committees, confidants, observers and first of all you, the voters, for holding proper elections. It was a very important test for the establishment of democracy in our state.
Elections have always been a target of political confrontations and can lead to extreme tension and social split. But to suffer noble defeat in the political struggle is also an important component of democracy. It is very important for each citizen of Armenia to realize during the post election period, that the country’s President mustn’t divide the society into “relatives” and “strangers”. I strongly believe Serge Sargsyan who has been elected in the post of the President of Armenia will be able to unite the society and create an atmosphere of mutual understanding and tolerance.
Regardless of the existing achievements the Republic of Armenia, the country still faces serious challenges. Our people have got a potential that hasn’t yet been used. The Republic of Armenia must become one of the competitive and swiftly developed countries of the world. For this we need unification and consistent work.”
