THE TRAITOR
- The number of those denying the Genocide has increased

With the purpose of contradicting the substantiated accusations addressed to him for refusing to recognize the Armenian Genocide, L. Ter-Petrosyan reminded, during one of the recent rallies organized in Yerevan, that he himself was the descendent of Genocide victims. At that time, many of us uttered spontaneously, “So much the worse”. This conclusion was conceivable and quite logical.
And recently, we came to know that Raffi Hovhannisyan, another descendant of Genocide victims, has disgraced the memory of his ancestors as well.
If we set aside all the big and small political sympathies and antipathies and guide ourselves purely by cool logic, what other characterization can we find for Raffi Hovhannisyan’s conduct, apart from the word “betrayal”? Reading the original English text of his congratulatory letter (dated August 29, 2007) addressed to Abdullah Gul, the newly elected President of Genocide-perpetrator Turkey, we find the expression “Great Armenian Dispossession” put down in black and white.
“It is to be hoped,” R. Hovhannisyan wrote at the beginning of his letter, “that during your tenure and that of the next Armenian President to be elected in several months’ time, Turkish-Armenian relations will enter a wholly new phase of reflection, exploration, discovery, and ultimate normalization.”
Such statement of question leads to the thought that the descendent of Armenian Genocide victims and the son of historian Richard Hovhannisyan is still in need of “explorations” around the issue of the Armenian Genocide. And making an undisguised offer for initiating “explorations”, he supports the Turkish side’s well-known proposal for setting up a bilateral committee of Armenian and Turkish historians, something that is the shortest way of questioning the fact of the Armenian Genocide.
Moreover, it turns out that for conducting those “explorations”, R. Hovhannisyan has chosen a relevant starting point which is not absolutely a new invention for the Turkish side, but rather - an extremely pleasant surprise. Here is the “scientific starting point” Raffi Hovhannisyan proposes to Abdullah Gul. “The deep divides between our countries, be they of contemporary character or part of the legacy of the Great Armenian Dispossession, must be overcome and resolved in truth, with integrity and through the partnership of the two new leaders and their fellow citizens of good faith and conscience.”
Let’s remember that several months after starting the Genocide of Armenians, the Government of the Ottoman Empire adopted a “Law on Dispossession” in an attempt of “giving a legal form” to the process of the extermination of a whole nation. And the law is still used by the Turkish falsifiers for presenting the Great Genocide merely as a process of “displacing the Armenian rebels” from the theatre of war to “safe areas”. This is the Turkish side’s unchangeable viewpoint it has been persistently trying for several years to impose also on the civilized states which have recognized or are in the process of recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
And now this spurious opinion is presented to the newly elected Turkish president by Raffi Hovhannisyan, the descendent of Genocide victims, who expresses hope that in case our country elects a new President in several months’ time, the Armenian-Turkish relations will normalize on the bases of the spurious political estimation known as the “Great Armenian Dispossession”, i.e. the official viewpoint of Genocide-perpetrator Turkey.
Special attention is paid to the following fact: R. Hovhannisyan clearly underlined the viewpoint that the establishment of relations on the basis of such political starting point will be possible only after the election of a new president of Armenia.
The reason is obvious: both Raffi Hovhannisyan and especially Abdullah Gul could not and do not have any expectations of the present-day Armenian authorities which have made the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide the goal of the country’s foreign policy. It is also pointless to have such expectations from the Prime Minster of Armenia, as the task of achieving the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide has been enshrined once again in his pre-election program.
So, who could Raffi Hovhannisyan have expected to fulfill his letter-promise addressed to the Turkish president several months before, if not L. Ter-Petrosyan who squanders promises on establishing fraternization with Azerbaijan and friendly relations with Turkey? Everything is more than logical and clear at this point.
By the way, if “Heritage” and its leader betray the historical memory of the Armenians, do they have the right to bear the name “Heritage” and form part of the national-political system of a country like Armenia?
