We Need Proper Elections

Interview with the deputy Chair of the Republican Party, MP Razmik Zohrabyan

“Mr. Zohrabyan would you detail the decisions made during the last session of RPA Executive Body, regarding the political behavior of some of your faction members, at the present stage of the pre-election campaign?”
“Yes, on Tuesday we convened the regular session of RPA Executive Body, during which we discussed several issues. We particularly touched upon the political behavior of the member of RPA Council Sasun Mikaelyan, because he participated in the rally organized by Levon Ter-Petrosyan and has announced about endorsing him during the forthcoming presidential elections.
It was our duty to express the party’s attitude towards the party member who has breached our party rules and didn’t fulfill the decision made by RPA Congress. It was proposed to dismiss Sasun Mikaelyan from the party and as a result of discussions the Executive Body confirmed the proposal.
We have also discussed the political behavior of the members of RPA parliamentary faction neutral MPs Hakob Hakobyan and Myasnik Malkhasyan. We have condemned their political behavior as well.”
“Do you think the statements made by Armenian Pan National Movement saying that “rat-race” has started in RPA, are justified?”
“RPA has got 140 thousand party members and the disloyalty of three of us can’t have any essential influence on the party. Even if we consider this step a “rat-race”, those people next to whom they appeared must draw conclusions. After 1998 when Vazgen Manukyan was elected as RPA Leader, many people representing the political wing of “Yerkrapah Kamavorakan Miutyun” (union of the volunteer protectors of the land) became members of RPA. And only three of them have openly announced about joining the former authorities. We haven’t received any other similar applications.
By the way the permanent tension around the pre-election campaign of the candidate belonging to Armenian Pan National Movement testifies to the fact that there are disagreements in this camp. “Yerkrapah” union has been established during Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s years of power, so it is natural that some of them still favor ex-President. This is the very factor that Levon Ter-Petrosyan and his supporters want to speculate, to tighten the race.
“ The campaign is coming to a close, making more and more evident the ratio between the candidates and the provocative programs of those doomed to failure. What are you going to set off against the steps to hinder the process of fair and free elections?”
“The attempts to mislead the people, separate them, to create an atmosphere of disagreement and conflicts is the inseparable part of Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s election scenario. The headquarters belonging to Armenian Pan National Movement started with small provocative actions and little by little extend them. When Levon Ter-Petrosyan says: “just wait and you will see what I’m going to do on February 20”, he actually hints about his provocative actions. He is well aware of the fact that he will never get the people’s vote of confidence. The only way to bring back power is to create tension and provocations. His supporters don’t even hide that they are going to attack the government building, the presidential residence, Public TV and other state institutions. Armenian Pan National Movement spreads false information to mislead the voters. I’m sure Arthur Baghdasaryan and Raffi Hovhannisyan are the components of this scenario. No matter they will openly announce about their unification or they will put into practice this scenario in a hidden way. Anyway they will perform the orders received from the higher levels.
Ten months back the Republican Party proved that our pretension on the people’s vote of confidence is justified. If you add Raffi Hovhannisyan’s 5% or 6% to the 1% votes gained by Armenian Pan National Movement anyway it won’t change anything. Thus Raffi Hovhannisyan performs the orders received from the USA and creates an illusion that Levon Ter-Petrosyan has supporters in the United States.
Arthur Baghdasaryan hasn’t received any concrete instructions and he can’t take independent actions. The candidate belonging to Armenian Pan National Movement needs Arthur Baghdasaryan, later to speculate the factor of having the support of France. They also pin their hopes upon the second stage of the elections otherwise they wouldn’t wait until February 20. But I’m sure the name of Armenia’s future president will be known on February 20. Our victory has already been proved as a result of various opinion polls. We will do our best to hold transparent and legitimate elections, to avert all the possible provocations, because our country must have a legitimate President. We don’t need falsifications.”
