NOTHING INTIMIDATES SERGE SARGSYAN’S LEADING POSITION

British “Populus” conducted a social survey, ordered by the Council of Public TV Radio Company, on January 21-29, in different RA provinces.

During the press conference yesterday the Founder and the Executive Director of the company Andrew Cupper brought out the results of the poll. It’s also worth mentioning that the polls conducted by “Populus” enjoy trust among the political powers in Great Britain, and during the recent years it has become the official research center of the United Kingdom’s Public TV, BBC and periodical “Time”.
1500 people participated in the opinion poll. All the data have been elaborated and summed up in London.
The question regarding the prospects of Armenia’s development was clearly formulated by the British specialists. Is the country on the right direction or not? 53% of the surveyed consider it right and 47% didn’t share this standpoint.
The comparison between the survey conducted by “ComRes” on October last year, before that “Populus” (in April), and this January display that more and more people have started to trust in the guideline chosen by the country and the number of the skeptics is becoming lesser and lesser. 42% believes the living condition of their families will improve in one year, 8% is not optimistic in this regard and 39% believes the coming 12 months won’t bring any essential changes.
By comparing these numbers with the previous surveys Andrew Cupper said: “The dynamics of the numbers is positive. Which means optimism has grown.”
The second group of questions included in the poll was about the election process. The number of those who believe these elections will be fairer than the ones in 2007 has increased by 5%. It made up the 30% of the surveyed. The number of those who think the elections won’t be fair has also a bit increased.
The British specialists also clarified the attitude of Armenian citizens towards other countries. In the 100 score scale Russia obtained 87,59 points, France – 84,35, Turkey – 14,03 and Azerbaijan – 7,83 points.
The last group of the questions was aimed at clarifying the rating of the 9 candidates running for president. Which candidate is able to solve the problems faced by the country? 43% of the surveyed believe Serge Sargsyan is the one to solve the problem of unemployment, Arthur Baghdasaryan - 28%, in this list Vahan Hovhannisyan and Artashes Geghamyan are running behind him. In the issue of strengthening the country’s economy Serge Sargsyan is yet again a front runner – 41%, Arthur Baghdasaryan running behind him with 28% and Vahan Hovhannisyan, Artashes Geghamyan and Levon Ter-Petrosyan took the 3rd, 4th, and 5th places.
“The isolation between the candidates in the question regarding the regulation of Karabakh conflict is bigger. Serge Sargsyan – 54%, Vahan Hovhannisyan – 14%, Levon Ter-Petrosyan – 13%, Arthur Baghdasaryan – 12%.” Andrew Cupper said, drawing our attention on the big difference between the numbers.
In case of the risk of war most of the surveyed, over again, consider Serge Sargsyan the only candidate to find the best solution (45%), Levon Ter-Petrosyan – 13%, Arthur Baghdasaryan –12%, and Vahan Hovhannisyan – 11%.
In the issue of the county’s security Serge Sargsyan enjoys the greatest trust – 46%. Arthur Baghdasaryan – 18%, Vahan Hovhannisyan and Levon Ter-Petrosyan 14% each. “So, in fact Serge Sargsyan is a front runner in all the issues,” head of “Populus” said after summarizing the results.
He also presented the ratings of the political powers: RPA – 56,89%, “Bargavach Hayastan” – 46,49%, “Rule of Law” – 46,33, ARF – 41,74, “National Union” – 34,04, People’s Party of Armenia – 32,57, and People’s Party – 32,21.
Who would you vote for, if the elections were tomorrow? From the 1500 surveyed, (those who will definitely participate in the election) 50,7% voted for Serge Sargsyan, Arthur Baghdasaryan – gained 13,4% votes, Levon Ter-Petrosyan – 12,6%, Vahan Hovhannisyan – 7,6% and Artashes Geghamyan – 6,4%. Tigran Karapetyan gained 4,5% votes, Vazgen Manukyan – 3,2%, and the votes of the last two candidates are less than 1%.
“Taking into account the before mentioned indexes, we can say that Serge Sargsyan has a significantly leading position in the forthcoming presidential elections. In fact he has more supporters than all the other candidates. And because only two weeks are left for the voting day, it seems nothing can intimidate his leading position,” Head of the British Company concluded.
