WHEN LOVE FOR AZERBAIJAN BECOMES MORBID IN NATURE

With the purpose of familiarizing himself with the construction work of the new “residence” that’s being built in the settlement of the Ministry of Defense, President ROBERT KOCHARYAN, Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, yesterday visited there. The construction work is drawing to a close.
The Ministry will have its own airport, occupying a total of 26 hectares together with the adjacent territories. The Ministry’s central staff machinery and the other separate subdivisions currently situated in different parts of the capital city, including the Chief Headquarters of the armed forces, will be located here.
After familiarizing himself with the construction of the new building of the Ministry of Defense, R. Kocharyan visited the chief headquarters of the armed forces and there, at the end of the 1.5-hour discussion, he answered the questions of the journalists.
“Ex-President L. Ter-Petrosyan announces that there’s no alternative to establishing friendly relations with Azerbaijan, because Azerbaijan is the only corridor linking us to the outside world. Your comments, if possible.”
“I have paid attention to that statement too. It literally says that Azerbaijan is the main gate to the outside world for Armenia. I think one should have a vague idea about geography to make statements of the kind. Open the map, and you will see that Azerbaijan cannot have such significance for us in terms of its geographical position.
Perhaps what he meant was that in Soviet times 85 percent of the freight was really transported to Armenia via the territory of Azerbaijan; but these were internal freight transportations connected with the internal trade circulation of the Soviet Union. Armenia was not a subject of foreign trade then, and naturally, couldn’t do that.
This also shows that the people do not have any knowledge of the present-day foreign trade structure of the Republic of Armenia. From the point of view of trade circulation with Europe, the United States and many other countries, Azerbaijan is not, of course, in such positions that might be so significant for us. The trade with Russia is also conducted via the territory of Georgia and the Black Sea, and these opportunities are now realized with the help of ferry transportations.
I would propose that those statements be viewed from a different angle. Negotiations around the Karabakh issue are under way. The Azerbaijani side has a kind of dizziness related to the oil factor and is, of course, trying to take a tougher stance because of its oil expectations. And now the first President of Armenia announces that apart from the oil factor, Azerbaijan also has advantage over us in terms of its position, as it opens for Armenia the main gate to the outside world.
If knowledge of Geography is on the same level in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani side will clearly try to take a much tougher stance on the settlement of the Karabakh conflict. On the one hand, they used the oil factor and on the other hand, they now turn out to be the main gate to the outside world for Armenia?
Generally. L. Ter-Petrosyan’s love for Azerbaijan is starting to bear a morbid character, and that gives rise to a lot of questions and even doubts which smell very bad.”
“During the recent period pre-election incidents with the participation of L. Ter-Petrosyan have become frequent: reckoning against a freedom-fighter, car procession in the most busy part of the town. And when the law-enforcement officers try to intervene, this is estimated as a criminal persecution against the Opposition activists. What will you say in this regard?”
“If you mean the incidents that occurred in Talin, everybody must realize that the Criminal Code is not frozen in the period of elections. On the contrary, the law enforcement agencies must be stricter during these days and try to apply the strictest form of punishment while choosing sanctions. It is necessary for us in order not to have greater problems during the elections because of the pre-election moods.
What happened in Talin was in front of everybody’s eyes. There are video materials shot by the media, and the law enforcement officers cannot close their eyes to all this even if they wish so. The special police structure is operating a hot line service and the Prosecutor’s Office has set up a special group, and they are obliged to investigate all the cases. It is just their duty to do that. And they will also periodically inform the public what’s being done for eliminating the consequences of this or that incident.
By the way, the traffic rules are not frozen during the campaign either. This concerns everybody. The incident that occurred at the Demirtchyan - Baghramyan crossroads was in front of my eyes. It is just obscenity. I believe that such obscenity should have been prevented by relevant state structures, and those who are culpable should be punished. I repeat, I myself was the eye-witness of that incident; the car standing at the crossroads was mine.”
