ARMENIA NOT TO SURVIVE WITHOUT A STRONG ARMY
- Being the greatest achievement in the whole history of the Third Republic of Armenia, the Armenian Army yesterday celebrated its 16th anniversary in solemn conditions.

In view of the complex situation existing in the region, we have always attached a great importance to having a strong army, considering the Karabakh conflict being unsettled. In the meantime, however, the further strengthening of the Army has become a more actual and urgent issue due to the unprecedented armaments race observed in the region.
The continuing tension between Georgia and its former autonomies, the serious problems existing in the US-Iran relations, the increase of Turkey’s military activeness in Northern Iraq, a territory situated in the neighborhood of our region, have added to the unsettled Karabakh conflict.
The fact that as a result of the withdrawal of the Russian military bases from Georgia in 2007, the armed forces of Armenia and the Russian military bases located in Gyumri will be simply forced to think of a “ring shaped defense” is no less important.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the political-military situation of our region is starting to radically change to the detriment of our country and its allies under the CIS Collective Security Treaty. However, considering the continuing armaments race in the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan’s large-scale purchases of military equipment, the armed forces of Armenia have to think not only of increasing their qualitative features and first of all - their fighting capacity, but also being at least comparable with the enemy in terms of the principal quantitative criteria.
In such conditions, L. Ter-Petrosyan’s idea-dream about having an Army with 10-15 thousand servicemen sounds more than strange. Because, even if we manage to settle the Karabakh conflict and establish normal relations with Turkey, armed forces of such a small quantity will not be enough for surviving in such a region where Armenia is situated.
And today, when in response to the “pink dreams” of the ex-President we make quite substantiated counterarguments on the impermissibility of reducing the Army in conditions of the unsettled Karabakh conflict and the existence of complex relations with Turkey, there emerges a necessity to take a simultaneous look on the strategic perspectives of the further developments in the region. Armenia’s neighbors are not at all France or Germany which surround small countries like Belgium or Luxemburg; these are populations increasing incessantly, as well as state formations having serious internal and external problems and periodically demonstrating an unpredictable behavior.
The issue of war and peace for countries situated in such regions is not a black-and-white contradiction, something the ex-President is trying to instill in our society either through misunderstanding or through his mentality guided by primitive analogies. On the contrary, for us, the issue of war and peace will objectively remain unsettled for several decades, if not centuries, no matter whether we want it or not.
Likewise 10-15 years ago, the Armenian Army will, in the visible future, remain the guarantor of our survival, and its strengthening will always be a top priority for our nation and state.
