MAY - MONTH OF SALVATION
- From May 28 our people will be on the threshold of the 80th anniversary of the new state restored in 1918, after 600 years of interval, during which not only have the first, second and third Republics of Armenia been successively established, but also the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh has been established in 1991.

It is impossible to draw well-founded historical parallels between the destinies of Armenia and that of Nagorno Karabakh, in case we close our eyes to the fact that both have been established through fatal and disproportionate May wars.
The fact that for around 80 years we have been living in an independent or partially independent but, anyway, in a state, which has had its inevitable impact on the indebt layers of our society.
Those who state that Armenians are the same as they used to be a century before pass over all the reforms our society has experienced especially after the establishment of the third republic of Armenia. They are based on the new perception of the independence we gained due to 1918 heroic battles and lost it in a very short period of time, something that served as bases for the formation of the second state.
During the first republic we didn’t manage to live a peaceful and secure life to perceive independence not as a consequence of a collapse of the empire but as a form of life with no alternative. Our people needed those 70 years of soviet time to understand that our new independence is a necessity and the only opportunity. After which the second collapse of the empire gave us the opportunity to take the second step.
To get at the root of it we should give a new commentary on the significance of our first attempts to the transition from the fight for freedom to the state establishment.
We must underscore that in 1918 we dealt with an “obliged necessity”. Should Armenia fail to get independence in 1918 the existence of our nation would have been called into question.
Being pressed by Turkey and Azerbaijan (established by the efforts of the latter in 1918), after the Great Genocide our people, bunched in Ararat Valley, had to battle for their self-confirmation. That is to say the battle of 1918 was a battle for existence that gave us an opportunity to live and struggle on the little land of our historical motherland.
Didn’t the heroic battles of 1992 have the same significance, for the salvation of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh? Of course they did. Because the same way as the Republic of Armenia and its population, faced danger in 1918, Nagorno Karabakh and its small population were also in danger of physical annihilation or emigration in 1992. In both cases the solution was one – victorious battle.
The distance of time gives us an opportunity to understand profoundly that the heroic battles of 1918 were as significant for Armenia as the liberation of Shushi and the opening of the corridor with Armenia for the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh in 1992. Thus, we can say, that Armenians established their present two states in May, through life-and-death battles.
And all that we posses at present – a comparably wider country and homogenous inhabitants, advanced defense system, are the consequences of victorious may battles.
Thus we can conclude that the victorious May month is not only a chain of successful military actions. It is first of all the verification of the will to have statehood – in Sardarapat, in Bash-Aparan and Gharakilis in 1918, and in Shushi and in Lachin, in 1992.
Armenian people have solved the issue of living in an independent land and the unification of the two parts through two heroic battles in May – in 1918 and in 1992. This means May is a salvation month for Armenians.
