TURKEY AGREES WITH ARMENIA ON SETTLING THE CONTROVERSIES THROUGH BILATERAL DIALOGUE
On the eve of President Abdullah Gul's visit to Yerevan the Turkish press qualified the meeting as a historic one. After the Turkish president returned to Ankara, the visit was qualified as a deed of great courage and it was noted that the visit open a new page in relations.
The results of the meeting are still being summarized, yet this fact does not hinder the Turkish press from filling their September 7-8 releases with comments on the Sarkisian-Gul and Nalbandian-Babacan meeting and their great importance.
On September 7 the Public Television of Turkey announced that "When returning from Armenia Gul said that Turkey gained a positive point with this visit. Gul also noted, "The ball was on our field and it shouldn't remain there. With this visit we made some good reputation and earned some points. My visit shall be praised and considered as an act of courage. Turkey shall not have a negative image, as I really care for that."
Abdullah Gul, focusing upon Turkey's initiatives in solving the regional issues of Caucasus, also spoke of the new opportunities which occurred after the recent events. Expressing his satisfaction with the high-level visit after 73 years of estrangement between Armenia and Turkey, he said that it might also contribute the peace process on Karabakh. Answering a reporter's question the Turkish President said that the Armenian side did not even hint at the "so-called genocide" during the visit.
After the presidential airplane landed in Ankara, Gul expressed his satisfaction with the Armenian support for the Caucasian Stability and Cooperation platform initiative. He said, "I saw that we are of the same opinion with Armenia upon settling our controversies through peace dialogue. In short, I believe that my visit was productive and very encouraging. Once again it proved Turkey's importance for the region."
According to Zaman, Abdullah Gul was thankful to the Armenian President for a warm welcome. He also said that the decision about accepting the Armenian invitation was made long ago, but announced only two days before the visit.
Why? Most probably because of the opposition, which was against accepting the invitation from Armenia. Leader of National-Democratic party Deniz Baykal had even said, "If Gul goes to Yerevan let him also lay a wreath upon the genocide memorial".
To this statement Prime Minister Erdogan replied that the opposition leader displayed extremely incorrect apprehension of Gul's visit, specially condemning Baykal for his words about the Genocide. "those words showed the nature and the temper of our honorable Baykal. That is his only ability. He is no longer capable of anything else. The country should nto be trustyed to people like him," Erdogan said.
After Gul's return Baykal refused to have a briefing with Foreign Minister Babacan. Baykal was supported by the Grey Wolves organization and National Movement Party.
On September 7 Erdogan condemned Baykal's boycott. Referring to the National Movement party, the Turkish Prime Minister said, "this party displayed the same approach. They felt injured because our Foreign Minister reminded about their former leader's meeting with Levon Ter-Petrosian. Did the diseased Alparslan Turkes meet with Ter-Petrosian? Yes, he did. If they met, what is the reason for so much irritation about our President's visit to watch the game of our national football team? We are sure that all the questions must be settled through negotiations, which would be impossible in case of rejecting the invitation. Such actions can never bring honor to Turkey. Therefore we shall go, sit around a table, discuss the problems and solve them. The country cannot be trusted to people with such mentality. They won't simply fail the settlement of present problems but will also create new ones."
The Turkish mass media also paid a lot attention to the Nalbandian-Babacan meeting, which lasted for about 2 hours and a half. The Foreign Ministers considered issues of regional and bilateral relations. They made arrangement to meet again in two weeks in New York, at the UN General Assembly.
