CHANGES IMPERATIVE IN SERGE SARGSIAN'S SPEECH
April 9 marked the end of an epoch in Armenia and start of a new one. What will the new one bring? There are many things to suppose, and the speech of the President Serge Sargsian after inauguration embraced those new emphases.
" I recognize the enormous responsibility that I have assumed. I know that I will be the one whom you will consider responsible for everything. I pledge not to avoid the responsibility... I realize the magnitude of the responsibility now, and I shall recognize it every day for the next five years. I shall bear with honor the responsibility of being the President of all citizens of the Republic of Armenia," he said.
The last sentence we wanted to hear both in 1996 and 2003, when there was a political polarization in Armenia, when the society was divided into two groups and the Presidents that took the oath should make assurances to both sides; in case of the first President it was not uttered and in case of the second one it was delivered in half.
Maybe evolution here showed its manners, as the new President of the country didn't hesitate even a moment to say things that were expected from him.
The new President didn't hesitate to appeal to the whole society, even those who didn't vote for him, "Part of our people supported other candidates and now I appeal to them. You have the right to vote for someone else than me, but I have not the right to be your president either. We should not part, should not create division between various parts of our people, should not disregard each other's concerns and pain, and should not go beyond each other's reach. Even if a wall of misunderstanding stands between us, I urge you to join us in eliminating that wall".
Imperative of changes was also reflected in the speech of the President, "Today I call for changes and we again announce a new start of changes. Each of us should be ready to start the changes from himself/herself".
Serge Sargsian took another step forward and thanked his opponents for the struggle and mainly those who admitted their defeat with dignity and those who shook the hand stretched for cooperation.
"We will build the Armenia that will unite all the Armenians, Armenia that will be the motherland of all Armenians".
Serge Sargsian didn't go round the theme of March 1 incidents, "This ceremony takes place about a month ago after the painful incidents, which wounds are still fresh. These wounds caused pain and bitterness to all of us. Today, I urge to look forward, together to seek and find the path of reconciliation, that of development for the Armenia of future. I am confident that we cannot have real and tangible success, unless we learn lessons from the past. What happened should teach all of us a lesson of vigilance and sobriety, compelling us to work with greater vigor and devotion".
Similar speech is really announcing a start of changes, as changes are necessary at present as the air we breathe, first, for the development of domestic society and the country, and second, for the international community, as Armenia is not an island, but an important part of the global world.
